incubator temp readings

sport72186 Apr 27, 2008 04:18 PM

the temperatures that i hear about for temp sexing leos: is that the air temp inside the incubator or the temp of the substrate the eggs lie in? last year i used a probe thermometer to keep the egg substrate at 85 degrees. it was my understanding that i would get 50% males and 50% females. I got 75% males. if it is ambient incubator temps that are supposed to be used, it makes sense to get majority males because the temp was probably closer to 90. this year i want all females. thanks for the clarification..

It is the ambient air temp that dictates what sex you will get. I suggest taking the temp at about the level at which the eggs will be off of the floor of the incubator (approx. 1-2 in.).
