Entire Hovabator as an Egg Chamber?

SPJ01 Apr 27, 2008 04:51 PM

Has anyone ever used the entire hovabator as an egg chamber instead of placing a seperate box inside?
I was thinking for the next clutch due after these hatch to fill the entire bottom of the hovabator with medium, place the screen on top of that, and place the eggs on the screen, leaving enough of a space between the eggs and heater.
Any idea if this would work?

It'll work, just not as efficiently as another container will. You'll also add some more variables into the equation that you'd have to compensate for; Temp & humidity swings are the first that come to mind, unless you use something to add thermal mass. I find it easier to just downsize and av oid those potential problems.

yes it works.......

you will need 3 inches of vermic or vermic perlite mix......

you will not be able to use the supplied bottom that comes with a Hova-bator,,,you have to use a taller bottom ,,,shipping box (fish shipping box)...etc

bury eggs half way into medium

the set them on the screen way will not work correctly.....they dry out........the heating element will dry them out without a separate enclosed container....

I stick 3 inches vermic/perlite mix, wet it and place about 5 clutches in there...maybe just 4 depending.........and it works....

I tried the set them on a screen method......

I killed alot of eggs...

.
.good luck.......find a bottom.....
