heating tape

Dave15run Apr 27, 2008 05:47 PM

Heating tape is new to me. I worked with snakes about 20 years ago and we just used a heating pad. With heat tape do you have to put wires in it? Do you cut to size? I would like someone to explain heat tape. You guys (and girls) have been great with all my questions. I need to get more cages for some snakes I want to buy. I might as well get some good information. Thanks.

Keep in mine that many snakes will not breed with just heat tape alone.
They need heat from above coming down, like the sun!

Thanks for taking the time to answer, but I have the same question. Do you have to put wires in it and/or cut it to size? This is really new to me.

No - Heating tapes are sold complete.

Do Not sever or cut, electric shock danger as well as it will most likely ruin the tape.

Like most reptile heating products, if you follow the directions on the package it should be "goof proof"

You are likely to be surprised, husbandry products have improved dramatically in 20 years.

Good luck and take care...

Thanks for all your input. Please forgive the questions, but I am have been "left behind" in a modern reptile world.

The most commonly-used "heat tape" is what reptile hobbyists call Flexwatt. Yes, you will need to cut this stuff to the desired length and crimp on wires. It is a flat, mylar-coated carbon heat element that you can cut with scissors.

It is actually quite easy, and they sell the connectors.

Go to the Pro Exotics website (look under breeders or suppliers for Pro Exotics). They have a How-to for Flexwatt in their FAQ section.
