Timber Rattlesnake in vivo

Orocosos Apr 27, 2008 06:24 PM

This guy is part of a local study of the timber rattlers. He remained completely still as my colleague and I approached - never flicked his tongue, never rattled, never did anything actively defensive. This was the first timber rattlesnake I have ever observed in the wild, and it's unfortunate that this species so often killed out of ignorance.

Here he is just as we walked up.

I really like the black ones but that guy has the best of both phases!

Supposedly, the common morph in this local is the black phase. This guy was an oddball. He was a perfect specimen for photographs though. Just sat right there and let me snap pics. It made my day. LOL
