Texas after his shed

VWillisJr Aug 30, 2003 11:45 AM

This water box set up works well for all my Indigos. They can drink and climb over it without spilling. They can soak before sheds and sometimes they use it for a toilet, which makes it easy to clean up. I only put and inch to an inch and a half of water in so they can get in without overflow. This has worked well long term for me and I always have one piece sheds and eyecaps are seldom a problem.

Great pic, nice looking snake. How old and big is he?

This big guy is a '97 hatchling. I raised him and his mate from babies and they have been my favorite snakes since I got them. The male is about seven and 3/4 feet and fairly heavy bodied. His mate is the same age and is about six and a half feet and is also heavy bodied. It has been cool herre the last few days and the male is already banging the glass somewhat telling me that he wants to visit her soon. I usually wait until around the end of October so he is going to have to wait awhile. Thanks.

May I ask what size Vision cage are you use and how are you heating it? Since Vision only recco's a 60 watt in my 422, I know this winter I will need supplemental heat.

Thanks

I keep my Texas Indigos in six foot visions. I have 50 watt regular light bulbs for the daytime heat in winter and 50 watt red bulbs for night heat. These are on timers so I don't have to switch them every night and morning. I try to change the timers with the seasons so that the lights stay similar to the length of day and night time of the natural seasons. In the hot weather I don't use the regular lights but switch to flourescent blubs which run cooler. In the winter I try not to let the temps get below about 64 degrees in the room. I have placed sheets of styrofoam(or however you spell it)between the back and the wall and between the ends and the wall. I think this helps hold the warmth in somewhat. I don't personally agree that colder temperatures are better. I think they can stand colder, but mine seem to do well without going colder and I don't want to risk any respritory problems. I like the visions very much, but they are fairly expensive in the larger size. I have a friend who is an great cage builder and he built me some cages for much less that work very well for my easterns. I will attach a picture from my gallery pictures(user name: vwillisjr) that shows these along with the visions. These have built in hide boxes that the snakes like very much. Just ask if you need anymore info.

My Texans have bred much earlier than my easterns the past 2 years...before the cold spell I but my couperi through, and they have produced fertile eggs.

They seem to be able to stand the cold spells just fine (down to 55 deg ntl in November), but...you may be right, they may not require it as I believe couperi do.
