Emergency - Sudden Paralysis

StarsBest Apr 28, 2008 01:08 PM

I have an adult male bearded dragon that has suddenly developed partial paralysis. When he walks instead of walking on his front paws he walks on the wrists as if he can no longer feel his paws. His bag legs seem stiff and difficult to move and he is wobbling badly, he seems to be all there in the since of he knows who I am and where he is. My dragons are all kept under Exo-Terra 10.0 UVA UVB bulbs, heat bulbs keep the thanks at 86 degrees with a hot spot for basking adults are kept on sifted play sand. Each tank has a river rock medium sized piece of drift wood that is secure and can not tip over, they each have a water and food bowl specially made for reptiles. All of them are fed proper greens such as collard, mustard, dandelion, turnip, and all live feeders are of proper size I primarily use crickets and horn worms. All the vets I have spoken to are baffled by this and don't know what to do and these are vets who specialize in reptile and exotic I'm hoping someone on these forums may have had this happen or herd of it and know the possibly causes. I do not think it's impaction for I treated the dragon with a little mineral oil and he pooped fine solids and urinates.

How long has he been doing this?

Some of the symptoms sound like calcium deficency could be a problem but it sounds like he has the right husbandry. I would bring him to the vet for blood tests.

All you can really do is start testing to eliminate possible causes.

I took him to the vet today I had to have him put to sleep. They took X-rays and found tumors on his spine, so he had cancer they said there was nothing I could do for him.

Oh.. poor fella. Kudos to you for catching it quickly so that he didn't suffer needlessly. My heart goes out to you.

I'm very sorry

Sorry to hear of your loss...I was thinking it may be an injury, because it seemed to have come on so suddenly...an x-ray is exactly what I was going to suggest you have done.. but tumors...hard to catch those early enough to do anything about...and around the spine makes it nearly impossible to remove.

I went to the vet today to get some Panacur and I didn't know they did this but before they put him down they put his paw prints in claw so i could have something to remember him by, they gave it to be today.
