Cold Packs

bakeaway Apr 28, 2008 02:58 PM

Has anyone ever used those frozen cold packs to make it alittle cooler in an area of a cage? It is starting to heat up here in Los Angeles and was just wondering if anyone had ever used them.
I was thinking of wrapping them in a towel so it was not direst cold. I think it would be better than putting ice cube in their water...lol

Ice pack works very well leaning against outside of enclosure or in cage in ziploc bag (keeps it from wetting everything)wrapped with tube sock, etc as does ice in water if its a dog plastic bowl that allows snake to use bottom as hide area.

I moved to Florida last yr . Snake room didnt have central ac (it does now) so used both methods

I'm in LA county as well and my snakes had a rough weekend with that heat....

If you have a good sized water bowl in the cages you can drop a couple of ice cubes in there. That works really well - for smaller cages / racks.

Have you tried a fan ?

DMong Apr 29, 2008 03:40 PM

Well, a fan only cools animals that are warm-blooded(as in humans too). When the skin perspires, the breeze produced from a fan, or even a strong breeze will evaporate the moisture from the skin, in turn making it cooler for a mammal.

This would do nothing at all to change the actual ambient air temps in a snake room, it would still remain the same, only you'd have some warm air being moved by the fan.

If you opened a door from the living quarters of the house, then blew it in with a fan, or opened a window, and it was cooler outside and blew it in, then it would make a difference.

best regards, ~Doug

A fan moves air which can result in cooling by convection.

When we sweat, there is convection going on as well as evaporation - but even without evaporative cooling, cooling by convection still works as long as the air is cooler than what it is blowing over. This can be accomplished by using evaporation (wet towel in front of the fan, for example) or a commercial swamp cooler - they have some that sit in your window and they cost a lot less to operate than AC.

The one I got from Tom is the same way.
Much calmer than any Cal King - but a few feedings ago, he grabbed my finger and coiled it something fierce and did not want to let go - he was sure he had the biggest rodent he had ever seen!

He constricts everything, initially he didn't but I ran out of f/t and had to feed him live a few times, after that, he likes to put coils around even f/t and usually starts the feeding process wrapped around it.

but they really work best with fresh air flowing into or through the room.

My snake room is a converted garage. I had windows installed to facilitate better air flow and circulation.
