Dark Boas

Raveness_d Apr 28, 2008 09:07 PM

Hello! I am somewhat new to the Boa forum, although I browse religiously.

I was just wondering if any of you Boa gurus could help me out with a few things. I've noted that many "typical red-tail boas" I've seen are generally a light grey-tan to medium gold colour with darker saddles and freckling.
Are there any specific locales or morphs that tend toward a darker (mahogony-esque) overall appearance?

Any pictures you can share of your dark Boas?

Thanks for all of your help in advance.

BCL's are darker and hypermel anery longicauda are pretty close to blackest thing out there

Those are quite impressive. I've seen both BCOs and BCLs before. Nice, dark animals.

Thanks for the pic.

Wow, what gorgeous animals. Thank you for the pics.

I'm a bit of a BCI noob... do all Hondurans fall under the "firebelly" category? Are all of them that rich, mahogany colour?

Would it be possible for a "normal" Columbian or more common local to display that colouring?

Appologies for the twenty questions.

"Firebelly" was a *marketing scam pulled by Dennis Sargent, the "entire" tall tail holds no merit what so ever.
Dennis purchased acouple pairs from Bob Harding who bred the first ones from the founder imports. All Dennis did was "repeat" the breedings using siblings from Bob Hardings efforts.

As with all BCI ssp. there are several variations(color, patterns) with-in the "alleged" geo-locales.With there being "NO LEGITIMATE" paper work for the many understood Central American BCI ssp there is no means to prove exactly where they came from. Many forms were caught from the islands, coastal and further inland(mainland). Many CA boa's are sold under exclusive labels in order to maximize profits for the importers as well as the breeders.*(which is mentioned above)

The color variants are simple products of refined captive breeding over the last 20 years.
Study the regions between Honduras and Nicaragua and its easy to understand there is no difference between our Hondurans and what is commonly sold as Corn Islands. There is another variant sold as a Red Nicaraguan, very similar differences in that variant can be found in both the Honduran/Corn Island variations.

These animals shift their color for whatever reason they see fit to do so ? The animal I showed has shifted to green like some of the best known Corn Islands ever bred,he also has a very cool steel blue mode he gets into occasionally, then when you think you have seen it all he can completely wash out his ground color to a dusty/dark tan with both dorsal and lateral markings in high contrast. Very interesting creatures with-out a doubt.

As far as the COLOMBIAN BCI,Ive never seen anything that can equal the overall qualities/abilities of the Central American BCI form.

more later ......

Thank you so much for the information.

I am very curious about all of this and am looking forward to reading what else you have to share. I had no idea Corn Islands and Hondurans were essentially the same ssp, and I've even looked into CI quite a bit. I just love their colouring and the fact that they stay pretty small, but I don't believe anyone is working with them over here (I am in Canada).

I may, if everything goes as planned, have some pictures to post later today or tomorrow and would love to know what you think.

Thank you again!
