AVID CHIPS

I thank you for the hint but I feel better when they get some meat on them. They are 8 mo.s and 1 year. I've seen some sizable implantation devices put in the cavity of the belly where no vital organs are located. Will do more research.///Doesn't everyone mark their expensive animals somehow or other? I should think so. It could bring home a lost one as well if it were found by someone who'd check.

I have heard that PIT tags(the little capsules) can cause tumors and infertility in snakes

Although I can't find anything on the internet to support this.

THANKS! I needed that, I was only going on hearsay.
NYS requires all Eastern Indigos to be PIT tagged at six months of age, which is why I will not own one here.

Thank you everyone. I don't know if the microchip (RFID)? is the same as AVID chips in anyway. What's the diff? The reserch was pretty scary.

Avid is a manufacturer of RFID chips. O

The site currently advised by the British Veterinary Zoological Society for snakes is the left nape of the neck subcutaneously placed at twice the length of the head from the tip of the nose. It is recommended that tissue glue is placed over the needle entry site afterwards.
I placed an AVID microchip in my Indigo in 2003 when he was a year old. I would highly recommend someone who has experience using microchips in snakes. The needle is actually a 14g needle and can be intimidating. The placement is a delicate procedure and you do not want to leave a scar. It took two sheds before the site was completely back to normal. I think of it as a minor plastic surgery type procedure. To this date he has had no problems.
