Newspaper or aspen ...to be or not to be

Ozz1978 Apr 29, 2008 11:48 PM

Ive always used newspaper, but since kings are so active I have been considering using aspen for several reasons. Firstly, I am in the process of building bigger racks since colubrids are more active than boids(where I have most my experience).

.. .my thinking being that since they are more active and with a bigger tub they will have a bit more room to move about and aspen will allow for burrowing activity which will result in happier inhabitants.

Two things though, newspaper is cheap, and readily available which is a definate plus. However, when they deficate if I happen to be at work or gone they tend to crawl through it smearing it around the tub and so on which can be messy.

With aspen Im wondering if this will be reduced because the aspen will absorb most of the liquid and abosorb some of the fecal matter reducing the amount that gets spread around the tub.

However the con from what I can see is that it is more costly then newspaper and if you have to change it often then that could be a deal breaker.

So Im curious .... how many of you use aspen vs newspaper or visa versa ... and why?

Again, the mess with newspaper is what is making me think of switching to aspen, that and the fact that it will allow them to burrow. Im referring to adults here mostly as small animals dont make that big of a mess.

I go with aspen and find you to be correct in your assumption of absorption. With routine spot cleaning it lasts a lot longer and the only down side I see here is when a water bowl gets spilled, it usually means most of the aspen gets replaced and some always gets in the bowls, I use deep bowls with shallow amounts of water, a real heavy bowl might stop the spills.

Aspen is cheap when purchased in bulk. That is definitely the way to buy it if you have more than just a few snakes. This route is far less costly than buying the quart-sized bags in pet stores.

Check out www.beanfarm.com for bales of shredded aspen.

Spot cleaning is easier that replacing paper. At some point you will replace all of the aspen in each tub. Still easy. You will notice the time savings right away.

I use aspen. I spot clean as needed and change the entire enclosure once a month. It doesn't smell like newspaper does and I don't have to worry about newspaper ink on stuff. Aspen makes a great cover for the kings too. Mine love to burrow in it.
