I have entered the BCI club.

Perhaps you could try and ID this sweetheart for me?

Danielle,

Very nice!! Knowing how tough they are to photograph(as in capturing the colors)I could only imagine how nice it looks in person.

I have some BCI too, they are kewl snakes!!!

I had 2.4 but gave a few to a friend and have only 0.2

So some day I need a male boa I guess lol.

Nice!!!

Thanks,

I opened my mouth and out flowed a melody black.

Thanks Frank.

I've been wanting to get into BCI for awhile, but hadn't found the "right" one to get started with. I'm very happy with this animal and am excited to get her properly sexed so I can start looking for a mate.

Beautiful boa. Very nice color. Hard to tell for sure what it is but it looks like it could be C.A possibly? Or maybe some C.A. influence? I say this because it looks like it has the head spear that is typical of some of the C.A. localities. What is the history of it. Also do you know what the age and sex is? C.A.'s typically stay quite a bit smaller that B.C.C and Columbian B.C.I. Here is a shot that shows the head spear of my Sonoran B.C.I. pretty well.
Again, Beautiful boa and good luck with it.

Milo,

Thank you for the insight! I picked her up yesterday after spying her at a local shop earlier in the week and falling in love with her colour.
The shop owner was adamant that she was a salmon, but I was sure this was not the case. (don't worry, I didn't pay a salmon-price :P)

Because of the general misinformation that is routinely flung around this particular extablishment, I am unsure of her sex or age, though they said she was female and around three years old.
I plan to get her properly sexed when she comes out of quarantine.

So that's two votes for CA and one for Columbian. I tend to lean toward the CA myself, but I'm definitely no expert!

Thanks again!

Well, defiantely a nice find whatever she is. I do agree with you that she doesn't look salmon but she does have some exellent coloration coming through.
It's probably going to be hard for you to tell for sure what she is, could be a mutt for that matter, but adult size is usually a good indication for C.A.'s although I heard of some that get bigger than average and also of columbians that stay smaller than average.
I happen to really like C.A.'s, partly due to their smaller size. (I have 21 C.A.'s right now) Check out this female. She is currently gravid at 5 years old, and is only about 4.5 feet long! This is her ovulation pic.

And another C.A. ovulation. This adult is only about 5 feet.

And this 03 female hypo is only about 4.5 feet as well.

As you can see, I find them quite addictive! Good luck with your new one.

Raveness_d Apr 30, 2008 01:58 PM

Those are some gorgeous C.A.'s Milo! That first female sure is huge. When is she due?

The smaller sized boas are very attractive to me as well, which is why I had originally been looking into Nics and some of the Island ssp. I seem to have a thing for red in snakes, and was very close to purchasing a very red hypo Nic awhile back. I couldn't pass this one up though.

Thanks for the good wishes. I might need them, as a thorough inspection of her today turned up a mite! That's what I get for snagging a shop-snake I suppose. Thank goodness for quarantine. Let the games begin. :P

Both of those females are due in July. They were both bred by a Het Leopard and the the first pictured is a Het Leopard herself. I also have another pair of Het Leos, that bred last year as well, that are still breeding right now. The female from that pairing just shed and I was hoping that it was her P.O.S but the male went right back to work on her when I put him in her cage so I don't think that she has ovulated now.

Good luck with your mite eradication. They can be a pain but at least you had the forsight to quarantine so you don't have to fight off mites for all of your snakes.

Well, no expert at ID'ing from pics .....

Looks CA to me, possibly pastel although that term is tossed around quite loosely.

Have any tail shots?

BTW, nice looking BCI!!!!

Thanks Dave. I've been looking for days online trying to find an animal with similar colouring to no avail.

What is the typical belly colour for BCI?

Tail shot? Sure!

Danielle,
...Bci colors and patterns are highly variable. I saw light tan ones and very dark grey ones within a few miles of each other in Panama. I would guess that your snake is from southern central American or Colombian stock.

Most seem to think CA, but I suppose I'll find out within the next few years.

I wish I knew for certain so that I could look for a mate of the same locale for her.

Danielle,
....It seems to me that we cannot say much more than that the snake looks like a typical "petstore" Bci. The majority of Boa Constrictors sold in petstores in the US without subspecies or locale information are either recent imports or first, second or third generation captive bred here from those imported snakes. I went to the CITES website and checked on the trade database to see what countries are exporting Boa constrictors to the US. Data for 2006 is similar to many recent years and shows 15,300 coming from Colombia (no surprise there)
87 coming from Costa Rica
36 coming from Germany (sort of a surprise there)
605 coming from Guyana
4,040 coming from Nicaragua
95 coming from Panama
38 coming from Peru
1,026 coming from Surinam
670 coming from El Salvador
The big numbers from Colombia, Nicaragua and possibly also Guyana (other than Bcc) and El Salvador represent farm bred snakes mostly. Sooooo....it is highly likely that your snake is from Colombia or Nicaragua or (maybe El Salvador or Guyana) or was CB here in the US from those lines of animals.
Jeff

Thank you so much for the time you put into this research, Jeff.

I am, however, in Canada. I would assume the numbers would be similar?

Thanks again, I appreciate your help immensely.

D,.
...Guess which country exported the most Boa Constrictors to Canada in 2006? Yes, you are right it was the US. I would imagine this included some high end CB animals (morphs included) and some others imported from Colombia and Guyana and Nicaragua by US importers and later reexported to Canada. Over the years Canadian imports of Boa Constrictors have generally come from the same countries as where we get them from but there have been single years with widely varying numbers.
...BTW, there have been a few recent years that the US was the largest exporter of Rainbow Boas. I think a bunch of those animals were actually CB rather than import and reexport WC animals.
J.
