If it was hooded, and a native species, it would have to be a Hognose. Unless it is a Pituophis doing the puffing thing. But then again in FL, I guess it could be anything. No way to give any definitive answer without the pics.

got over there, and half the body was in a shrub. i tailed it and expecting a long snake, a short snake with a triangular head turned on me lol i dropped and then IDed it as a Hog.A little different than the one i saw in my yard a year or two ago that was more of an anery Copperhead pattern.
Heres a pic ,,,also i found a wet toad hopping away from the capture site and put the toad in the bag with the snake and when i got home the toad was gone..YUMM
is this an Eastern or Southern??? Thanks Chris

does feed live ??? (and F/T) i now see Gnaw marks

It's an Eastern Hognose, they feed almost exclusively on toads, so it it has gnaw marks, it's not from prey.

Quite a handsome hog, very healthy looking. I am not familiar with them looking like that. I caught one south of Alligator Alley in the Fakahatchee Strand (suppose to be beyond their range there?) that looked very much like a pygmy rattler in markings and color. Pretty cool that with the stress of capture and all, it still fed right in the bag! I had a solid black one as a kid that I caught when I lived in North Carolina. Toads were very abundant and available food source and it was a great pet for awhile. These are nice little snakes that could be a lot more popular.
