Why are boas purple?

ajfreptiles May 01, 2008 04:04 PM

What gene makes a purple boa? Has anyone ever worked towards making a purple boa?

I know some who are working towards a Blue boa and some that are working towards Green...but what about purple?

Hope you enjoy this video.

Blue and Purple Boas are very closely linked.
Was my statement earlier,ad the "Red" to the "Blue"
I have a het Albino(coral)male that has reds,pinks
blues and purple colors. The problem is the older he
gets the more black covers all those colors.Lar M

Color: Making or developing it works the same way with paint as it does Boas. It just takes a whole lot longer due to having a limited amount of key colors to work with. I used to do the color matching of stain and lacquers in a former life. This is the key to your question Andy:

The color you have on that Boa is a very very light lavender. Lavender is primarily blue with a touch of red added. Many Boas we work with probably have lots of blue, but that blue is masked by reds and blacks that change everything. When you have a youngster like that animal that is not showing the red that will most likely inevitably come, the blue influence can be seen.

Make more of them Andy and try to make it more extreme. You CAN do it.

Here is one "purple" Boa that I have that was much more brilliantly purple than this image reveals as a baby.

I'm working on it too. I'd love to see some really purple Boas some day. Like the purple on some Albino Retics. That would be pretty neat wouldn't it? Time will tell...

Go for the purple Boa Andy! Ain't boas great!!!

First off, I really enjoyed the chill music you added in while filming your beautiful boa with us! 8) Second I agree that selective breeding the purple color would be a great idea. I just think no one has took the time to focus on this project yet. I've seen more breeders lean towards the pink, red, and orange colors that can be influenced by the boas more often then purple.. I think the best way to bring out more purple is to find a BCC of some sort probably a GUYANA because most of those that I've seen show major purple and also my buddy has a super dark purple one. I know some breeders like Gulf Coast Reptiles have used their high pink salmons and high pink SURINAM boa's to make some insanely ultra high pink salmons and normals. They probably used a surinam boa because most true suri's display super high pink contrast with their over all look. With that boa Andy it would be wise to hold that one for that kind of project! Great post and thanks for sharing.
