need help with springtails

Hlynn1975 Aug 30, 2003 03:20 PM

hi all,

I just got my order of springtails in and they came in a cup of dirt. I need to transfer them to a box of carbon like people always talk about but I'm not sure how to do it. How would you guys suggest I switch them over?

Thanks,
Heather

Well when i got mine they came in a little deli cup with charcoal in it. But i got the rest of my dry goods a few days later and i transfered the, into their new home.

My culture is set up like this:
- Rubbermade box that is about the size of a shoe box.
- Put some activated charcoal in it
- Pour in some water so theres about 1/2" in the bottom
- sprinkle some bakers yeast ontop and add springtails

I started my culture last friday. I checked it last night and there were a few larg springtails but tons of little ones. about 70% of them stay on the water (i guess they are so light they can walk on it).

You can remove them with a turkey baster, spoon, or if you can find a few on some charcoal, remove it and tap them in the tank.

Also, they produce best around 65-70o. I kept mine close to the floor and the air conditioner blows in their direction so they stay around 65 (when the airconditioner is on) according to my raytek temp gun.

Ya you need to keep a lid on the culture cause they can climb.

I got mine from eds, they have the cultures and springtail kits. I got the kit. Mine are doing good. Im going to let them grow about another week then introduce some to my tank before i get my darts in 2-3 weeks !!!!!!!!
