annaisagecko May 02, 2008 03:16 PM

Anna here,

ok tomorrow is the NC reptile and exotics show, and i might be able to get a new leo! so i need suggestions on how to setup the cage, because last time it was apparently not a good way for it to be setup and i want to do it right this time,

and also things to look out for when i first bring it home, we plan on taking it to the vet first thing and i have a little cage to keep it in until we can do so,

ill hopefully find one for under $100 or its not gonna happen....and then id be sad,

but anyway help would be greatly appreciated!

pick your enclosure. i use a 10 gallon tank or storage tubs. id recommend paper towel or tile for substrate. you'll need at least one hide on the warm side. some other people like to have a hide on the cool side and a humid hide on the warm side. I double my warm hide as a humid hide by placing moist paper towel or sphagnum moss inside it. have an under tank heater to keep the warm side's substrate around 90 degrees (belly heat is most important to aid in proper digestion). you will also need a a water dish and a small dish for 100% calcium. if you are feeding mealworms you will also need a food dish. i would get the cage up and running and all temped out before getting your new leo. also, keeping your new leo in the new permanent enclosure right off the bat instead of moving it from the expo to your vet enclosure and then to your permanent enclosure will cause less stress to the animal. good luck..

thank you,

but now my question is i have a really big like 30 or so gallon tank from my last leo and all the stuff i need, But i'm possibly getting a baby this time "my last one was fully grown when i got it"

so i've never brought one up before and so now i'm wondering do i need to start it off in the big tank or my 10 gallon? if i get in adult it will go straight to the big tank,

and also this didn't come to mine until now but for a juvenile should i just provide a full dish of mealies at all times? or should i give it lets just say like maybe 4/5 a night or something?

thanks for your help!

start a juvenile in the 10 gallon. honestly, a 10 gallon is more than enough room for one adult leo. a smaller cage is better for juveniles though. for a juvenile, i would feed it as much food as the leo wants to eat. a constant supply of mealies is not a bad idea. i provide a constant supply of mealworms and just refill when low or empty. advice for the mealies is to find an escape proof dish cause it is a pain to chase them around the cage..

Hello again!

I would also add, if possible, it would be best to start with fresh equipment and all cage furniture. At least bleach, rinse, and air dry the set up a few days before you plan to get the gecko. We don't want anything passed on. Bleach will take care of most of any lingering beasties, but realize it won't take care of them all.

its not really possible to buy all new stuff right now, but the only thing thats been in contacted with the other one is a little hide box and it has been bleached, and was scrubbed and rinsed to death , the other stuff was bought right before my last one passed away so it was never put in with her, and by the time its old enough to go to the big tank we'll have the money to buy new stuff,

thank you for helping me!
