Attn: Sulcata Owners, Wall Advice Needed

Grape May 02, 2008 08:25 PM

Hey,

I have 5 sulcats, the largest is 40lbs, the smallest, just bigger than a softball. I've had them in a 30ft x 20ft cinderblocked walled enclosure for the past 3 years, however we are moving to a new home which afords me the opporunity to build a new enclosure, 130ft x 30ft.

The cinderblocks have worked for me in the past as a wall, however it seems impractical for such a large enclosure. So, I've looked into 4 ft high chain link fences as one option, and 2ft high aluminum flashing as another option.

Any suggestions on how to precede? I worry about escapes, theft, etc, the normal outdoor tort concerns. I also worry about $money$ especially with the increasing gas bills. Does any one have any advice on what they've used? What (of what i listed) would be better? or any other radical ideas. my concern with the chain link is that they can see through it. I need help, this is a large area which I've been clearing for my torts, but I also need to not go broke in the process. Any help or suggestions are GREATLY appreciated!

Thanks,

Rick Grape

My adults are on 1/3rd of an acre. It's fenced with 6' board on board privacy fence. Then, I dug in 18" x 8' secions of 1/2" PT plywood into the ground. IF they can see 'out' they are going to 'push' ALL the time. Obscure their view in my opinion.

...and recyling materials to make enclosure for them:

_boombox styrofoams, black trash bags (for insulation to offset ultility consumption$$$) with solar rigs depends where you live
_salvage curbside garbages or cheap good o' cull lumber from hardware stores
_undisputable cynderblocs for foundations (since you had them laying around)

... now stitch'emtogetherwith;...your brain...

and remember; no matter what you do, they WILL eats us all out of da house...

...one other thing which our neibourgh keeps commenting on and on...is that our greens are the BEST on da block...
