Very OT: ACD pup pix

gfx May 03, 2008 01:48 PM

These wee little bums kept me from going to the reptile show this weekend, but somehow its ok. They're 1 day old in these pix, they're Australian Cattle Dog pups.

Here's the momma Moxie. She may be wishing she was a snake right about now...

Thanks! I love the way the muzzles look in the second pic, reminds me of the way horse muzzle feel.

Mom looks exhausted! Great pics. Will the pups stay light like that or darken up like the mother?

gfx May 03, 2008 09:44 PM

They'll start to get their color around 2.5-3 weeks old. The breed was developed in the late 1800s using dalmatian, among other breeds. Being born white and coloring up later on is from the dalmatian influence. They'll all be blue, what shade of blue is yet to be seen.

Congrats! Absolutely my favorite breed of dog. My Sally was 14yrs when she was euthanized because of hemangiosarcoma. She's been gone about 8 yrs and I still cry when I talk about her. Her whole purpose in life was to decide what I wanted her to do and do it before I asked her to. She won first place two years in a row at a local frisbee contest.....we weren't invited back the third year. Not the best choice for just anyone (as far as a breed) but, they are wonderfully brilliant companions. I'm glad you don't live here....it would be extremely tempting. Sally also was a CGC and therapy dog at the local nursing homes. Take good care of Moxie!

Sally sounds like a true delight, its hard to know exactly what to do with yourself when the shadow who tells you what to do is gone. I totally know what you mean, I've had these guys for 17 years now and I wouldnt be able to function without one, or in my case several..lol. I lost my best girl about 5 years ago to cancer and I still cant talk about her in public. We all had a lovely ACD today, first we went out back and flipped logs, rocks & boards, then I did yard work and they helped by moonscaping.

Nice to know there's another fellow ACD lover in the forum!

Aw, you can't be angry at those little cuties. Besides, they'll be another show in the fall. The show was a little more diverse than past shows, which is good. Now all we need is someone from this forum to show up with some nice BRB's!

Thanks for the pics, beautiful dogs. Are they also called "Blue Heelers?"

Ed

I could never be angry with these guys! Well...ok, maybe a little, but that'll take another 8 months for that to happen..

Yep, blue heelers and if you get far enough west, queensland heelers. Originally made up of a mix of dingo, kelpie, dalmatian, smithfield collie and a few other things depending on who you talk to. They can be tough little customers, but I like a strong mind so we tend to get on pretty well.

Neat looking little guys. I did not know they were born white. This one belonged to Mad Max

I love dogs. I don't have one but let my friends Rotties out every day while he's at work. Mean as hell dogs but they like me so I forget how mean they are.

Aww...Rotties are sweet, they just take their jobs very seriously. They're very capable, but in general they're really nice dogs. They get a lot worse wrap than they deserve.

FRoberts May 06, 2008 07:11 PM

They are very sweet. I have personally seen these dogs chase people out of my friends house, they meant business. One time someone in a group of people was insulting my friend and the one out of four knew who it was and literally chased the person out of the house without any verbal command or gesture on my friends part. If you where there you would have to admit it was quite amazing how the dog picked up on it's owner being upset (inside) and knew whom was upsetting him in a group of people. This person and the owner being on opposite sides of room with all of us evenly spaced from the owner in the room.

There are 4 of them. Two basically tolerate me and two REALLY like me a lot.

Like no one (in the world) is that glad to see me kinda stuff LOL.

I forget how guard dog like they are till someone walks by and they grab the fence with their teeth and shake the entire thing from side to side. They are very capable watch dogs as you stated but yet loveable to whom they like.

Isn't that what a watch dog is supposed to be like ?
