OT... My First "BIG" Snake

aanata1 May 03, 2008 07:13 PM

I am SOOOOOOOOO excited about this one. I love my BRBs, like children, but I needed to get a few snakes with some real meat on their bones... bulky guys, so I decided to get a few BCI's. I looked for a long time at many different localities and morphs and decided to work with the Sonoran Leopard. Once that was decided the search began. I almost ordered one from Hans Winner in Germany, the original breeder (I think). Right before paying him and waiting till August for my snake, someone right here in San Diego posted an adult leopard male. The pic on the post was iffy, but I just knew he was a looker by the small part of the tail I could see. Anyway, I picked him up today (thanks Monty!!). I am just thrilled with this guy (he even hissed at me when I put him in his cage... such an awesome animal. Here are the two pics I managed to snag before putting him in his new home!!

What a beauty! My very first non-WC snake was a BC, I have a complete soft spot for them. Gorgeous, congrats!!

Wow, congratulations. I really like the looks of the leopards, much more so than many of the BCI morphs. Any breeding plans? (I think it would be neat to pair one with a Sonoran hypo, with Sonoran hypo leopards as the end result.)

Beautiful snake, thanks for sharing.

Thanks,
Ed

Just bought one today

Get out?! A "pure" hypo Sonoran???

What's that saying - "Great minds think alike"

Never quite understood that saying, since you could also
say "poor minds think alike", but we'll stick with "great"...

My mind is just snake obsessed! I can't get enough of these little critters. But yea, a pure sonoran hypo female. A big one too, ready to breed later this year or next. She'll be here Tuesday. I can't wait to see her too!

Cool, I can live vicariously through you with this project.
A few months ago I mentioned to a friend this exact scenario... that it would be one of the few boa morph projects I'd be interested in.

Did you get it from the same breeder/seller that sold you the leopard male? (Just ignore that question if you don't want to answer, I'm just curious.)

Good luck!
Ed

I got the male from Monty Montalbo. He told me that the male was originally from Hans Winner, but that he bounced around for a couple years from various breeders (Pete Kahl and a couple more). I told my leo he has a home now, so he can get comfy and get ready to be spoiled by food, girls, and lotsa cali sun... LOL.

I'm getting my hypo sonoran from Darrin Brasher (sp?). I can't wait to see what she looks like in person, but here's the pic he sent of her.

Ah, I saw the hypo the pair in the ads, was wondering what happened to the female. Now I know!

Good luck with the pairing. Hopefully in 3 or 4 years you'll have some killer Sonoran hypo leopards.

Thanks,
Ed

I actually almost missed her. I was asking Monty (the guy I bought the male from) if he knew of any available and he mentioned it. I was shocked that I missed it. I've been watching those classifieds like a hawk since I've been getting my projects going. I am very excited to get her in the morning. I'll take a few pics. She's supposed to be very docile too, which I'm really thrilled about. I love the big sweeties. And I hope I will get some nice hypo leos in the next few years.

miloradovich May 05, 2008 11:46 AM

Great looking hypo! I've got a few hypo sonorans myself and they are a great sonoran morph. I am always amazed at how different they can look between their dark and light phases, it really is like day and night.
Looks like we have the same plans too, I plan on crossing mine with my leopards to keep the locality pure since most out there have been crossed into the more popular hypo lines.
Definately post more pics of that girl once you get her.
Milo
