Snake Ban Question?

SKYFIRE_1 May 04, 2008 01:16 AM

I see where they are accepting letters from Snake Owners on their stance with the Ban on Snakes on April 30th. Does anyone know if they are going to come to a decision shortly after that?

Also it says that it is banning the import of snakes, and Interstate transportation of constrictors. Does this mean we could still buy and sell locally? Or is even buying snakes locally going to be illegal?

I guess I really don't understand what they intend to do.

It is a federal ban so I think it is going to allow local people within states to keep them (provided they aren't illegal already) but it will ban shipping boas and pythons over state lines. It sounds like it would even restrict their movement over state lines as private property (similar to New Mexico and Utah's current state laws).

Also, given the scenario in FL which prompted this inquiry I would not be surprised if you see a lot more restriction in that state in the near future. This ban will set a national standard that I believe the states will follow. In other words, I wouldn't be surprised if state laws banned them altogether as well.

In addition, the comments submitted were supposed to talk about the likelihood of big constrictors surviving outside of South Florida. If you read through the comments a significant percentage were from activists against the keeping of exotic animals. Not many people on our side sent in comments and most of the ones who did only talked about how the reptile industry would be destroyed. That was the wrong argument to make (at this time) imo.

Maybe I am being too pessimistic. I would like to hear more from people who were more involved in efforts against this ban.

Nothing is being banned yet. This was a "fact-finding" exercise from the government and nothing is going to happen yet.

That's true. I neglected to mention that in my original reply. However, most people who replied to the inquiry did not address the questions posed by the feds and that is what concerns me.
