climbing BP?

OmarMorsy May 04, 2008 07:43 AM

My tank has two hiding places , a couple of plastic plants, and a foam rock background. One side of the tank is at 79 farenheit, the other side 77. my question is why is my BP always climbing to the top of the foam rock and squeezing himself beween it and the metal lid of the cage? I thought they liked to hide in their hides.

The younger the snake the more likely they will climb.

However your temps sound too low. I like a 90-94F hot spot on my warm end (using a UTH). Or at least a 84F ambient on the warm side & 72-74F on the cool end.

I have not had my BP long, but he likes to climb. he likes to perch on his driftwood frequently.

Make sure the lid is secure 24/7.. and bump up your temps a bit.

BP are from Africa, hot and humid. too cool and run the risk of respiratory infections.

Have a quick question re: temps are those temp ranges ambient or surface? My 20Gl has ambient temps of 75-80 (taken with digi therm/hydo) but my surface temps are 93-96 hot 84-90 midlle and 74-82 cool side.. Are these ok or do I need to raise the ambient temps?? Thanks for any advise

You're good with those temps. Actually the surface temp on the hot side is a little towards the high end. I keep mine around 90-92, as I think most do. You'll be fine where you're at though. I've had mine in the mid to upper 90's to get rid of a RI.

Ok, i thank you for the reply was wondering about them. I am getting back into BP's and figuring those were good but wanted to make sure. My new guy just took his first meal the other day so I am very happy...

Because heat rises and cold falls and as your temps are a little on the low side he is trying to climb to get to a wormer place more then likely . And some times they will clime but normally there is a reason for it .David

Definitely crank up your temps. If anything, it should only be that low at night or in the winter (depending on location). And make sure your lid is 100% secure. One of my boas has escaped twice by squeezing himself between the lid of the tank. If they can get their head through it, there's a good chance they can get all the way through it. And if they have something to climb on, trying to escape will become more tempting.
