Need Help With Snake I.D.

Princess90503 May 04, 2008 04:15 PM

Hi Everyone,

i need help identifying this snake. A friend of a friend found it in a construction area in Southern California (Palos Verdes area, Los Angeles County) a few days ago. i don't know much else other than that. It is a small snake, probably not more than 3-4 feet long.

i don't really know how to post pictures here & this is my 1st time posting here so i'm not really sure if i'm doing this right, but i have pictures i took of the snake here:

I believe that is a San Diego Gorpher Snake. It will probably rub it's snout raw if you keep it in that wire enclosure.

Looks like a Gophersnake to me, Pituophis catenifer. Someone else will be better at getting it down to subspecies.

As Diego mentioned, that area of California is home to the San Diego Gopher Snake(P.catenifer annectens), although it could possibly have some amount of intergrade lineage from other close neighboring subspecies.

Thanks for the backup, Doug. I thought the same. I think I can see some Pacific influence in there, but it could just be all the IPA's I've been knocking back all day...
