Exotic Animal show in Raleigh. Tortise ?

rockinreptiles2 May 04, 2008 05:22 PM

Who went and what did you get?? I introduced myself to fatboy. Nice guy but i was in a rush to get home. Sorry fatboy next time we will have to chat more.

Rumors are USDA came in and took some tortises. Anyone know any thing about that? I warned a company that was there and the guy had an attitude and stated well until the man with the badge shows up and says I can not sell them I will keep selling them.
I explained I just helped open a pet store and the USDA and animal control mailed me a letter with a copy of the law for selling turtles and tortises.
I heard 40 grand in torts were confiscated. Not sure how true this is.
Any way it was an Ok show the second show in AUg will be better. It was good to meet Fatboy and Mark from Boamaster. Mark I hope I helped you sell a few cages. Thanks to Rich from Reptile Basics I got 3 more thermostats.

I don’t know what happened there BUT there is a federal low that is enforced by the F.D.A. that the sale of turtles with a carapace of under 4 in. is illegal . It dates back to the 70’s do to the transmission of salmonella , and the low was passed and was placed under the jurisdiction of the Food and Drug Administration . You can goggle fed. turtle lows . There is a 60 year old law the head of USDA was so kind to dig out for me and send me in the mail. It does not matter the size you can not have them or sell the in the state not even for educational purposes. It is sad but true.

What state do you live in ? and there may be a state low that prohibits them but why would that be the concern of the federal District Attorney ? That would be a state matter right? David

I am in NC. I manage a Pet store and we have to have permits for sugargliders and hedge hogs.Records have to be kept of who we sell to and buy from. A USDA inspector comes around every so often and checks the records and checks the animals.
It is weird. The local Police Cheif has to give the OK on monkeys to be kept in the city and came up with a $300 fee for each monkey.
The owner of the pet store I manage does not cut corners and does not want to cause trouble (get fined) for something we did not know about. So the Dr. Kitrell who is incharge of the NC USDA was called by the local animal control officer about selling torts in the store. Thats when the letter was mailed to me.
Funny thing is another store that just closed down sold torts for years and had the USDA inspections and was never fined or warned about the torts.

No problem Rock...good to meet you. Met snaketatter also, very nice guy, really got my wife thinking about a snake tattoo!! May show is always a little sub-par. The September show is always better because more clutches are ready for sale. This show was really MORPH light. Plenty of normal balls and boas. Still a good show.

Thomas is correct that you cannot sell turtles and tortoises in NC but unless the vendor had a literal boatload of turtles under his tables there was no way it was $40,000 worth. They had a few Redfoot babies and a couple of Testudo (don't know which species). The animals weren't confiscated either, they simply had to remove them from the table. Every show there is a few tables who have animals that aren't legal to sell in NC, usually N Pinesnakes or Tiger Salamanders. Most folks are happy to get a heads up but some get pissy.

The August show is always MUCH better due to the number of cb animals available.

I was there, you never know what you might find at the flea market outside that show. There's this guy selling driftwood, for those of you that like that kind of thing, a truck load from the outer banks. This piece is 11 inches at the widest point...8 bucks. Couldn't believe his prices...yep...everything was priced liked that.
