Bok Choy Blooms?

Rosebuds May 04, 2008 07:20 PM

I went greens shopping today, and ran across a stalk if bok choy that looked like hell, but it had a new stalk growing up out of the middle and has two stems full of flowers and buds. Of course I grabbed it and will be planting the stalk to grow, but can I feed the flowers to my uros and DIs?

Oh yeah, I have given my uros, dragons, chucks and everything those blooms and they go nuts over them.

So any suggestions on how to cultivate the plant or seeds? I have so darned many lizards that I am trying to start a garden and home grown feeder supply for the dragons and spinys.

I too have started a garden of Zucchini, squash, nastursiums and pansies. The zuchinni and squash I started as seeds in starter trays, the pansies I bought already started and the Nastursiums I am growing from seeds. I am also growing bell peppers and tomatoes (for hubby) that I started from seeds.

I know that when I need to get plants started I place the start in a glass of water in the window sill until roots are showing then I plant them.

The person you should really ask is Doublemom, she is a Master Gardener and I'm sure would have some great advice on how to get plant starts to root and grow.

Good Luck !

Well, I pulled all of the dead and wilted leaves off of it this morning, and just look at this little gem! It was junk to most of the shoppers that passed it by, but it looks like a very prolific stalk to me! Do you think the multiple small stalks and stems indicate that it will regenerate like endive does?

LOL! Nobody but a lizard person would get this excited about a blooming bok choy, would they?

LOL... Everyone thinks I'm absolutely NUTS because I let my dandelions grow... I actually grew dandies indoors under fluorescent lights over winter for my Uros. My friends and family thought I was completely cracked after seeing that.

For the bok choy, keep it in water until it has a good root system going, then you could probably cut off the older leaves and plant it in the ground or in a pot, and hopefully the new starts coming off the sides will grow.

As for planting a lizard garden, we've had one for two years now. If you go to a plant store, many of them have sprouts of tasty greens. Now, if you were on top of your game, you would actually plant bok choy in fall, they survive a DC winter very easily even with alot of freezing rain and snow, and come spring, all your stalks will be in bloom. Keep in mind that lettus doesn't like really hot summers, so planting in the early spring and fall is a great way to not have to water too much.

But I have this great stalk now.

I hate you all...I can't get one flower to grow. So I just keep buying them.

mrslate May 06, 2008 06:48 PM

...woe is me...
Just kidding. Anybody live where you can't have a garden, and succeed with window planters? Shallow growing flowers, hangers, flowers you can crowd, anything like that? I pinch back the stems like the greenhouse taught me but it is really not working and takes up too much space for anything but just keeping them fresh until they get eaten, then I buy some more. They think it is so great my lizards eat them they give me a discount at least. Big trays for 10 bucks each. A bit expensive on a weekly basis, but, hey, I got flowers.

But I didn't! HEB produce department got this one to grow, and did so through sheer neglect! LOL! I just hope I am up to the challenge of keeping it alive.

The blooms are very fragrant, and the DIs and Taz, my adult mali, all run to the front of their vivs when they see me coming with them

Hey, is there a perfume based on bok choy? There should be.
