Mites! Oh, me too!

yvonbug May 04, 2008 07:54 PM

It must be that time of year, I've got a baby burm, (albino). He was born on june 4th, 2007. So he's a little guy. Anyways, I sent for some Reptile relief and some PAM last week, but it hasn't arrived yet. The mites have all of a sudden gotten totally out of control! My poor baby is covered with them! I had looked up on the internet about mites and read that Pyrethrins kills these buggers. I haven't done this yet, but I bought some puppy shampoo that has this in it, and thought that since he's so young, maybe if I dillute it, I could bathe him in it and maybe rub it under his chin, and then rinse him off real good, maybe it would help? I've bleached out his cage today, but haven't put him back in it yet. PLEASE, any advice on what I plan to do? Thanks, Yvonne

OK, just my two cents, but I wouldn't put pyrethrins on any of my reptiles...just too risky for me. If you feel like you need to do something while waiting for your supplies to arrive, then I would soak the snake in a container of water with a couple of drops of dishwashing soap for about 30 minutes. The mites have a pocket of air around them that allows them to stay underwater and breathe. Adding soap breaks the surface tension so they can drown.

grab you some olive oil. Slick the snake down from head to tail. Then put him in a tub, plastic box or what ever you may have. Let him hang out for about an hour. Wash your cage and cage items with a bleach water mix. Let air dry. Wash the snake after soak time with a mild soap ( I use baby soap ). That will take care of your problem period. You may want to do all over again in a day or 2 if you happen to see any more mites that you missed the first time. I've used this method many times and it has never failed me. Try it out, it does work very well.

There are also several threads within the few pages of this forum with plenty of good info. Take a few minutes to scroll through them.

The secret to getting rid of mites is the same as getting rid of fleas, you have to break their life cycle.

And, no, I wouldn't use any kind of puppy or kitten shampoo.

Give it a water bowl/container large enough for it to submerge in and it will take care of a lot of it itself.

Hang in there!

Well, I've tried the reptile relief, and the provent-a-mite and the poor baby still is covered. I did it just like it says to on the bottle, and I also did it the way they say to do it at LLLReptile. I think the provent-a-mite stuff works, but the reptile relief sure doesn't. So I thought I'd try the oil bath way. Can I use vegetable oil? -Y-

OK I got me some olive oil. Do I rub it in under the head into the folds of that stretchy skin under the chin too? Thats where I see alot of those buggers. And do I put it on his eyes? The little buggers are there too. I just slick him up from nose to tail? Actually, his eyes look a little swollen.
