Hunting around Killeen, Texas

dave15run May 05, 2008 10:08 AM

I have looked around Killeen (south of Waco and north or Austin) for a few years and have not found a place to catch Kings or corns. I have found some others but really want these. Does anyone have some ideas? I would not mind driving less than 100 miles.

There's probably kings somewhere around there; they're probably pretty ugly though. Look for grassy areas in association with old man-made structures like barns, pins, windbreaks, etc.

As far as corns good luck. I know they are in the counties right east of you, but they aren't common. Your best bet is Brazos and Grimes counties. They are hard to flip, so road cruising is the way to go. It's far from a sure thing though. In 100ish nights of cruising (from 02-07) in Brazos and Grimes co I found a total of around 10 or so, and that was mainly on the road that is famous for them...

Thanks for the help. The two that have replied have told me the same thing. I guess that is where need to begin.

I have found corns on the roads north of Franklin about 50-60 miles east of Temple. I suspect they are in the sandy woodlands east of I-35 as well. There should be speckled kings and milksnakes around there as well since I have found both around Franklin. Actually, April and May is a good time for milks on the roads in that part of Texas.

The hilly rocky country around Killeen isn't great for either of those species.

If I was looking for these species around your area I would try hunting some of the roads over towards Rosebud and similar areas. I haven't ever been there, but I've found all your target species near Calvert on the other side of the Brazos River.
