everglades rat vibrating tail

board917 May 05, 2008 07:38 PM

my 2 foot ever rat likes to vibrate his tail almost everytime i go to pick him up, once he is in my hands he is fine and he never strikes. also he has eaten 3 fuzzies in the past week, is this too much?

3 fuzzies should be fine and as far as the tail vibrating is probably more of a nervous reaction than a threat any ways. my fox snakes even buzz their tails almost as if on command when ever something moves around them, or casts a shadow, or bumps their enclosures and they would never bite me! some ratsnakes are just more agressive than others. I don't know why they get such a bad reputation!

my red rat who is 4 feet and change is ready to shed... i was holding her yesterday and she was pushing against my fingers and i assumed she was trying to start the shedding process. Then she opened her mouth and started knawing on my finger, didnt strike it just started chewing on it, i have had alot of red rats in my life and never seen or heard of this. Any explinations?

Many snakes will typically do that when they're very HUNGRY!. Feed it more, and it will likey stop doing that.

she has since eaten 2 good size mice... before this she had been offered food for 24hrs and didnt eat it.

tail vibrating is a natural behavior, why discourage it? I think its cool if the snake isn't stressed. if it eats and its not acting agressive than don't worry about it. the best thing about keeping snakes is witnessing natural behaiviors.
