Is polyurithane (not sure of spelling lol) ok to seal wood with or what is something good?

Polyurethane means a few different things. Mostly commonly when people say polyurethane then mean either the single component oil-based or waterborne varnishes.

I'm not a fan of the oil-based polyurethanes as they can offgas for years even though they are otherwise "dry". I do believe they could be safely used but one would have to take extra care while applying and allow plenty of drying time. The poly would have to be thinned with solvent and several coats would have to be applied very thin. Typically when building a finish with multiple thin coats you apply each subsequent coat within a certain period of time so the coats can "burn in" to each other. I think for a reptile cage, at least the interior, I would allow each coat to cure fully and scuff sand to allow each coat to bond to the previous coat. This takes a lot of patience and even experienced woodworkers often get impatient and apply coats too thick. This can be a disaster with polyurethane and lead to a soft finish that never fully cures.

I would only use an oil-based finish if I wanted the warm look they are known for. And even then I would probably use an alkyd or phenolic varnish instead of a polyurethane varnish. And I would still ignore the instructions on the can and thin each coat and wait for each coat to dry and scuff sand between coats.

Waterborne varishes are nice, the most common is probably Minwax Polycrylic. I have used these and they are easy to use and low VOC. The main problem with them is that they do not hold up well to common household cleaners and some of the disinfectants commonly used on reptile cages. They are also not great in high humidity environments.

What species do you need to seal wood for? What type of wood is it going over (oak, birch, etc.)?

multi cage system and the problem is that I went away and asked my father to put supports between shelves and he used pine strips and i know i heard pine is bad and was looking for a way to seal the strips or do the strips not really hurt just not large amounts of pine?

Are these pine strips on the floor of the cages where they will be exposed to the moisture inside the cage? Or are they outside of or on the ceiling of the cages somehow?

Well assuming they are not near the floor of each cage and/or won't be exposed to moisture from a mister or something, you have a lot of choices. I would not use oil based varnish or paint. Waterborne poly or paint should be fine. Shellac or a primer/sealer would also work.

ok well for the most part it will keep desert species so moisture shouldnt be a problem only one will have any kind of moisture...
