hibiscus flowers

uropat Aug 30, 2003 08:08 PM

I recently read on a web site that hibiscus flowers are great for uros to eat, and I just happen to not use pesticides and have hibiscus plants all over my yard. So I jsut want to check that it is ok to feed them to my uros and how often it is okay.

Ya, as long as you don't use any chemicals (pestiscides, herbiscides, etc.) it should be fine. Good luck I'm sure your uro will LOVE them.

The flowers are a great treat and a good way to get a fussy uro to eat. According to the wild plant page on Deer Fern Farm's website, the leaves are also a nutritious addition to a uro's diet, so you've got a double bonus! He referred specifically to the Chinese Hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis). I'm planting some for next spring, I think.

I am jealous, Uropat. In our garden there there are zero hibiscus-plants.
But when I was you, I would give them both the leaves as the flowers two times per week. And on other days endive, carrot, etc.
