OT: What do you charge for shipping?

carl3 May 07, 2008 08:53 AM

I have been certified to ship live harmless reptiles via Fed Ex for over 3 years now. I have shipped dozens of times and have not had any problems until recently. I shipped a package from NJ to NV. It weighed just under 3 lbs. FedEx audited the packaged & listed the actual weight at 7 lbs. I was charged over $85 for priority overnight to ship two black rat snakes, one of which was a hatchling. I called FedEx customer service and received a very ignorant service rep who argued with me & tried telling me it was illegal & against their policies to ship reptiles. I eventually hung-up on what seemed like an outsourced comapny.

Anyway, I know gas prices are higher than ever BUT is anyone else getting overcharged outrageous, unreasonable amounts for shipping through FedEx? What are you charging?

Shipping is up across the board. I charge actual shipping costs.

Certain purchases will include shipping in the price, but either way the buyer is the one paying for it.

Shipping prices are way up of course, but I still try to flip the bill I have always paid shipping on most things and I do spend alot of money at times but to be competitive in the reptile market I'm not sure how you don't pay shipping costs. I did get charged $162 for a 10 pound box to California. And it wasn't a large box either. I did just send a pretty large box out and was charged $120 something. Even with the smaller boxes I would say the average cost is about $60-70 now. Its only going to get worse. Definitely not worth it to flip the bill on a "normal" black rat snake. You'd be paying someone to take it from you! I remember years ago when some boxes were $25 overnight to ship, oh the good old days!

glad to hear others are getting slammed with outrageously high shipping costs. who knows...it may not matter anyway if the boa/python bill gets passed. maybe i'll spend my money vending at local shows vs. selling online

yesterday and the seller told me his shipping charges were $108 from Missouri to Texas on a 5 lb. package. On top of that it was guaranteed delivery by 10:30 a.m and UPS didn't show up until 12:20.

For $108 I think they should AT THE VERY LEAST honor their guaranty!!

Call them and let them know it was late. It might take a month or two but you will get every penny back. A guarantee is a guarantee.

each company has its rules regarding on-time packages. There IS a window in which they will consider a "late" package to be "on time". Usually an hour or two. Also, your package could be a day late or more, and they won't refund the money if it's out of their control (weather delays at airports, etc..). But like the previous poster said, contact them, file the complaint and see what happens. I had this happen around Thanksgiving and they oversold their capacity (package was 7 hours late) and I received a full refund which I then passed on to the buyer of the animal since he actually paid for the shipping.
Look into it and see what you can get!
