We have a Savannah monitor "Chomper" and I have read a lot from many of you who raise and breed monitors. (good info folks!)

Thanks in advance to all who read this and any who have creative insight to offer.

Currently Chomper is housed in a home made enclosure. ( I love building these things, woodworking is fun.) for his first few months his enclosure is 3 feet wide, 2 feet deep and 2 feet tall.

For substrate I harvested a bunch of river clay from out back, then baked it in the oven at 500 degrees for half an hour. (to kill all parasites and eggs) then re-hydrated it to where I could make a big ball and it would hold its form.

He has 2 burrows, a warm burrow 90 degrees inside, and a cool burrow 70 degrees. a repti-log and some creek stones. The burrows are lined with moss to hold the humidity in, and I mist his cage once a day to keep his dirt from drying out.

On the end where there is not dirt, I use Eco-earth coconut hair for it's ability to wick up moisture and release it slowly.

A halogen basking lamp heats the rocks to 130 degrees, and chomper sometimes sits on top of the rocks, sometimes he lies under them.

He eats "gut loaded" and calci dusted crickets, a couple pinks a week and an occasional earthworm. His water bowl gets changed and washed daily. (he poops in there all the time)

Today he "Chomped" his first fuzzy! I used to think the snakes were barbaric, till I watched this monitor slam living creatures into his rock pile, again and again till they quit "screaming".

Is there anything I am missing, or any suggestions I could use?

Failure is not an option, We want nothing more than for chomper to grow old and have a good life.

Any CREATIVE input will be so appreciated. We have 3000 sq. feet of home, and a 40 acre yard, room and expense mean nothing to me. I am hoping to have an outdoor paddock that would make Steve Irwin (you are missed) proud by the end of summer.

Anyone else ever receive paperwork from your local town government requesting you to list your animals?? I did, Code enforcement tells me that I am required to list my animals in case 911 ever has to respond to my home.

I thought that living out in the country would be ideal for these critters, yet whenever I take one of them out to play in the yard, every motorist that passes by has to do a double take.

I guess a privacy fence should be added to my shopping list.

one question why are you feeding live mice? only a sick person would get pleasure out of watching it die... not to mention there is the chance of the monitor getting hurt... why not feed it f/t mice instead.

Gotta love human nature and their sick sense of curiosity.

I don't necessarily think that feeding live rodent's makes someone "a sick person".

Firstly, I have to tune out the sound. I raise my mice so it's not like I enjoy seeing one of my babies get ate.

Secondly, I enjoy raising the mice. Tell me how to euthanize a pinky humanely, and I will do it.

there are directions all over the internet for simple gas chambers to euthanize basically its a container and simple co2 cartridge mice fall asleep and then the co2 does the rest so basically the mouse is out cold when it dies so it doesnt feel anything...

beef is between 2 1/2 to 3 feet... yea i know it is addicting... but i plan on starting and exotic eductional park in my area when I graduate college and get some money built up lol.... yea I have a reptile specialty store in my area so easy for me to get rodents frozen but gasing is an easy way to euthanize...

Tom,
Firstly I commend you for what you intend to do.

My questions are not meant to pick on you but more to enlighten me.

With a sav and a caimen how can you be so sensative towards the prey? (A good thing in my book, I release bees before I will swat them)

And with college on your plate, I was wondering how you can find the time to care for such a zoo as the one you have.

Between the caimen and the monitor, it would take half a house to provide proper room for those critters to live comfortably.

Again, not finding any fault just wondering, you must never sleep.

My fiance who lives with me helps to so combined its not to bad. Definately is alot of work but its what i want to do in my life educate people to care about saving exotics. The monior has a big cage and my caiman is only a hatchling right now he is a new addition. I am building out half my basement for him when he gets bigger. And I am not sensitive to prey and dont have a problem with the food chain i just dont like when there is an option such as euthanized f/t mice rather than live and the fact you dont have to worry about the mouse biting the reptile and causing all kinds of problems. I just dont see why to feed live mice unless the animal will not eat the frozen thawed which is rare.

I only feed my Monitor live mice. I don't consider myself sick I just got tired of constantly cleaning up mouse pieces after he tears them up. I really don't consider a mouse very dangerous for a 3 foot lizard.

All it takes is the mouse to bite the monitor or snake and I have seen reptiles get infections, scars and then you have the cost of vet treatment. Why take the risk?

I seriously doubt my monitor would get an infection even if a mouse actually managed to do some damage. As long as the monitor is healthy there shouldn't be a worry of infection. It is usually under kept monitors that are prone to infections and they usually have a lot more to worry about then just the bite.

I should also point two thing out. One I am only talking about white feeder mice which in general are a very defenseless animal not something more dangerous like a rat and two my feeding of live mice was a choice I made in regards to my monitors tendency to rip the mice open and spray mice parts everywhere which is very difficult to clean everyday.

could still get injured dont care how big and also if bought in bulk in the long run it is cheeper unless doing reptiles on a huge scale. And as i said the only way I see it not sick or necessary is if the animal wont eat f/t.

No sicker than feeding a lizard live crickets.
