I'm the newest BD owner!

reddog4063 May 07, 2008 03:32 PM

My GF has wanted a bearded dragon for awhile and I finally surprised her with one this week. I have read all the commonly available care sheets (such as Melissa Kaplan's, etc.) and am learning about everything from correctly sizing prey (about the same size as the distance between the BD's eyes), to correct veggies to feed (carrots = vitamin a toxicity, lettuce = no nutritional value, spinach = prevents calcium absorbtion), and about gut impactions, substrates, heat and keeping down humidity (new one for me there, usually i'm trying to raise it) etc etc etc. I'm becoming an expert lol.

I have over 10 years experience with burmese pythons. I've owned and worked with brazilian rainbow boas, columbian red tails, ball pythons, garter/ribbon snakes, and various other herps. I'm not really asking any questions here but I was just hoping to hear some stories, or advice or anything else from established BD owners. What did you wish you'd known when you bought your first BD? Any cool little tricks or tips for feedings/training etc that you've picked up over the years? Or any other little tidbits you wish to share?

I'll tell you right off the bat that I am already anthropomorphizing the little guy a lot. Whereas my snakes seem coolly efficient and instinctual, he actually seems to want to run around and play or come out of the tank to hang out at times. Really enjoying my first week with him!
