Need info asap, follicle question

Wallbanger26 May 07, 2008 07:09 PM

Does a female have to be with a male to produce follicles or can the cooling process alone do it?

Thanks

females are always producing/growing follicles - the introduction of the male at the right time will determine whether she absorbs them or fertilizes them and makes eggs.

From what I have read/heard from the bigger breeders is that putting a male in with a girl at the beginning of the season jump starts the follicles and they start growing. Meaning - don't wait for them to develop, put the boys in early. And keep putting them in until they are not interested...

Good luck!

when you use an ultrasound to monitor follicle growth (or some supremely talented fingers) you don't need to waste time pairing up "on a chance" or to "grow follicles". females cycle at different times of year, and you can manipulate follicle size somewhat with temps and feeding.

once the females follicles are in the 12-20mm range, you can put in a male and get the job done. usually within a few hours. pull the male the next day, and send him on other adventures.

monitoring follicles makes breeding more precise and less taxing on the animals, eliminating the need for pairing them up over long periods, hoping for a match.
