NEED HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

smartiejoe Aug 30, 2003 09:25 PM

My first gecko Ever is dying and i don't know what to do. It had stopped a while ago and I was giving it medacine from the vet. I was also giving it a special food given to me by a professional. It's eyes wont open anymore and when I looked at her eyes it didn't even look like she had any eyes. I have done everything I could do. I know that I have had a few die in the past, but this seem soooooo much more difficult because this is the very first gecko I ever got. I just want to know if there is anything else I can do?

More information is needed for a good diagnosis. What did the vet say? Is the vet qualified for herps? What kind of medicine have you been administering? What kind of food? How was it kept? How long have you seen symptoms, and what were those symptoms? Sunken eyes is common with dehydration but it could just be that it is too late and the eyes of animals often sink in during there last few hours. I'm very sorry but if you have been administering care for a while and the geckos condition has degraded that much I doubt there is anything you can do. Chances are it was not your fault. Someone else may have something for you to try but I don't think I'm qualifyed to tell you anything but to keep your head up try to figure out what went wrong this time and when you feel your up to it find a reputable breeder and this hard experience will make you so much more knowledgable in the future.

The vet was the one in berkley who specializes in reptiles. He gave her batril. It did seem to help for a while, but she still got worse. Actually, I had another leo with the same symtoms but a friend had it so she was the one who took the other one to the vet. she did tell him that i had another one with the same symtoms. He said that it was a bacterial infection.
I had been giving her water by dropper feeding it to her.

Thank you for your concern.

It sounds like you have done everything (more than some people would). My gecko was REALLY sick up till ~ month ago, at the end I had the vet try whatever medicine he thought could possibly help. At that point it couldn't hurt because he was suggesting euthenization. I was very lucky, it turned out antibiotics (Baytril) helped even though all the symptoms were pointing toward crypto. GOOD LUCK

That is great news!!! Baytril was what I was using too, but it did not help for a long time.

i am happy for your lizard and if mine does go, I will know that I did everything that I could.

flagyl i used this for a bacterial infection that my uromastyx had, it did wonders for her, she came about a month ago skinny, and lethargic. I got her these meds, my uro was 71 grams at the time, and she recieved .03 cc of this stuff mixed with mater. now my uro is great gainign weight eating like a pig and living with my FAT male.
Good luck and sorry if you loose her.
