breeding mice

cinderellawkids May 09, 2008 01:35 PM

I have as pets bred rats for a couple years passing them along to a local store for store credit.

Now I have a young Sav. I need to breed mice for him as the local feed market is quite expensive and rat pups are too big for him to eat after 10 days old.

Are Mice harder to breed and keep than rats? Are they obviously pregnant at 14 days of gestation and born at 19 to 21. Cause at this point they dont seem to be breeding yet, although Ive had two males fight to the death and many other issues.

If I need 6 to 8 jumpers a week, how many pregnant females do I start with, and do I try to space them at 2 week intervals for delivery? ZHow many is an average litter?

you can't be keeping males together, they will fight to the death, i have 3 tanks of mice, the ratio is 1:3-4 and don't switch them around, they are carnavors any chance they get, even if you handle the pups while cleaning the cage they can end up eating the young afterwards, it's stupid. leave pairs as is once you get them together, ive had litters up to 8. There are alot of good sources online for, "breeding mice" thats where i got my info, and by all means make sure they have plenty of food and a wheel is good, especially during raising young. Good luck on all the other questions.

Mostly correct, especially about 1 male per cage, but I've never had any eat a litter just because Ive handled them. Mine in fact are quite tolerant. But definitely just set up a 1.x colony and leave them alone, don;t remove any or add any. Leave the male with the colony after birth.

I bought some mice at a reptile expo a few months ago, and they have between 13 and 21 in each litter. Nobody has been eaten, but with litters that are that big, once in a while and baby will die.
I don't know how ling you've had your mice, but they might not be old enough to breed, I think(I'm not possitive) that they don't breed until they're 6weeks old, so at 9 weeks they would begin having babies.

I have 1 male and 2 females together right now. The females are a little young. Will wait and see?

nope, 21 in a litter. There are 2 females in one of the cages, one had 21 on one day and the other had 21 two days later. Those were the two biggest litters so far. I think that they were the third litters for each of those females. The male goes back and forth between that cage and another cage with 2 females.

what cha feedin them things ,goodness gracious,i want that strain just for pinkies........C

Rflagg May 16, 2008 09:22 PM

Probably albino lab mice. I have some albino mice that regularly drop 18-20 or so per litter.

The Swiss Webster strain was bred for large litters and they supposedly have litters of 20-30.

They're just little white mice, pink eyes. Didn't think they were anything unusual until I was flooded with pinkies.

Also, if you have 2 or 3 pregnant mice and one of them gives birth, the others will eat them so fast you might not know they were born except for the skinny mouse.

What I did do when I had quite a few preggos, when one would deliver I would put her over in another container. The when another one delivered the next day, I experimented and put them and that new mom with the first mom and babies. It was hilarious! Old mom ran over and stole all the babies and put them with hers. Then the two of them sat on them and nursed. Same happened with the third, but that is as many as I would put together.
