A couple of pacman questions

RobertIII Aug 30, 2003 10:38 PM

Just a couple of quick questions to make sure i am doing evrything ok.

1. i am feeding my pacman goldfish, pinkies and crickets.i feed him a pinky,he is fine for a week, then i switch to goldfish that week and crickets the next and etc, is this a good diest for him?
2. i was wondering if sand would be a good sunstrate to use in his water dish,so he could burrow in it, sice he spends 95% of his time in it?
3. i want to get another pacman and was wondering if i bought a ten gallon tank and put one of those plastic dividers in it would that work? i mean would it stress the frogs out, if they saw eachother and etc?

thanx

Ok, I'll show you whats wrong and right step by step here.

"1. i am feeding my pacman goldfish, pinkies and crickets.i feed him a pinky,he is fine for a week, then i switch to goldfish that week and crickets the next and etc, is this a good diest for him? "

Ok, no rodents shoudl be in it's diet at all because they cause blindness, and I'm looking into goldfish still but they should only be offered occasionally.

What size is your frog? If it is still small it should be eating a meal of about 3 crickets every two days of so.

"2. i was wondering if sand would be a good sunstrate to use in his water dish,so he could burrow in it, sice he spends 95% of his time in it? "

No, I wouldn't use sand for anything with these frogs because it may cause an impaction. And it doesn't matter if it's just in the water dish since sand sticks to everything. He shouldn't need anything as a substrate in his water dish.

Try something like bed-a-beast or eco-earth for a substrate for the land section and just the water dish for water. And do not use undertank heating, use a heat lamp.

"3. i want to get another pacman and was wondering if i bought a ten gallon tank and put one of those plastic dividers in it would that work? i mean would it stress the frogs out, if they saw eachother and etc? "

No, do not put them together in the same enclosure regardless if it's siliconed off or not. The chances of spreading diseas is even greater than the tremendous amount of stress this will cause on both frogs. I suggest a separate 10 gallon for each frog.

Oh, in case you are wondering what my qualifications are for this information I own 5 cranwells' horned frogs and 2 surinam/amazonian horned frogs, and have been keeping this kind of frog for 8 years now.

The former post was correct. Sand is a bad idea because it can cause impaction if the frog swallows some during eating or shedding/eating the skin. I d have another tip on feeding; use nightcrawlers. They're simple to obtain at any walmart sporting goods section or tackle shop, provided they are not dyed. Nightcrawlers make up the staple diet of my two horned frogs, which are perfectly healthy and growing well. I also feed large crickets once in awhile, when I need to administer vitamin powder, because it always wipes off the worms during feeding. Here's a pic of Bene, my frog. She loves nightcrawlers.

Some on here will say that putting 2 pacs in the same tank with a divider is very very bad because it will stress them out but thats pretty much what I did, I placed a piece of glass in between my two and it didnt seem to bother them a bit. Also, depending on who you talk to, some will say that goldfish are bad and some will say that mice are bad. Then there are those who say they have fed a staple diet of each and havent had a problem. I personally feed mine a mix of feeder fish, crickets, mealworms, and mice.I just feed mine whenever I feel thats he's slimming down a little bit and I alternate it that way he gets a variety. The sand on the other hand I have not dealt with so I wouldnt know. Again this is my personal experince and I claim to be no expert. Everyone has there own opinions on whats best and you should just expiriment to find out whats best for you and your frog.

What I did was tear apart one of my junk ten gallon tanks and place the side panel in my good tank as a divider. The two both ate and acted normally. I had no problems with them. Like I said, there are those who would grill me for this and say that it is bad but its working for me. I mean its like the gravel situation, there are those would say that you should never ever put them in gravel and I recently seen one guy on here who said hes has always used gravel and has never had a prob. Different people have different ways but if it works for your frogs, it works for your frogs.

What is usually said about pinkies is that their fat content causes a buildup behind the eyes and can cause blindness. If you are going to offer pinkies I would keep it to maybe only 1 a month. Same with the feeder fish. You can also offer earthworms, mealworms, wax worms or roaches. But your main staple should be crickets. Careful with the wax worms and mealworms, they are also fatty and they can be a little rough on the frog causing possible impaction if offered too often.

As for adding a divider to the tank, if you are going to do that you can get the colored or frosted plexi so that they can't reall see each other, but I wouldn't divide a 10 gallon. I understand that they don't move around much but you should still offer them a little more space than 5 gallons each. I know I wouldn't want to live in such a small place. But you also have to keep in mind the whole parasite and illness factor too.

Sand would be a bad substrate, because pacman frogs tend to eat all of the general direction of their prey. I also wouldn't divide a ten gallon tank, since another tank would be about the same price anyway. I would listen to amazinglyricist and not feed pinkies. The pet shop I got my frog from fed him one every week, and he was fat beyond compare. Be sure to gut load and dust your crickets with vitamans and calcium, too.
