Probing question

agirlnamedrita May 09, 2008 11:56 PM

We have a redtail who's last shed skin measured 101 inches...it is VERY thick and quite heavy...we were told it was a peruvian female...but honestly the guy we got it from knows nothing about snakes really and wasn't the original owner...we tried to probe the snake but it clentched it's cloaca up tighter than fort knox...even pulled the flap inward...nothing was getting into it...lol...is there a way to relax it so we can probe it and find out for sure if it is in fact female?

If the Boa your talking about is the Boa your
holding. That is a Colombian type BCI,a very nice
one.I'd also bet it is a fem.Very short distance
from cloaca to tale tip.If you are not going to
breed anytime soon. The person that taught me to probe
always used triple antibiotic to lubricate.Seems
like a good idea.Although it was pointed out to me
that triple Antibiotic also has spermicide affect.I'm
not familiar with anyway to relax the Boa beside
turning down the lights and putiing maybe Marvin Gaye
or some other romantic music on,LOL. Lar M

that is actually my daughter in the picture...and we thought that the snake was a girl..at least we have referred to her as a girl...and she is one AWESOME snake...Never and i mean NEVER has she even shown any signs of trying to bite anyone...she is food agressive..she wastes no time at all...we even feed her in her enclosure (for lack of room anywhere else...lol)...and yet we can still reach in at anytime and she won't show any signs of wanting to strike...we just make sure we rub her towards the back to let her know it is us and not food...we would love to breed her...but the only other boa we have is a nicaraguan...we think it is a male...but the pet store we got him from has no clue to the sex ...he is about 3 and a half to 4 foot and very slender bodied..maybe we can one day find mates for these 2...I would LOVE to have boa babies

That is pretty much how most of my Boas are as well.
You can reach in they know the difference. You would
be smart to find nice male Colombian type for her.
Then a nice fem Nicaraguan type for the male you
have. When your husbandry knowledge and finacial
situation allows you to do this properly of course. It
actually cost more money to breed Boas successfully then
you will probably make.Unless your at it a very long
time.It is a great experience though.Something that's
worth doing right or not at all.Good Luck,Lar M

I also would bet that it's a female based on tail legnth. And I may add that its a very pretty Boa as well . Colombian I'm sure. I would get a male that would compliment her looks, or a morph, like a Hypo or something in your price range, and avoid breeding her to your nic. That combo would only get you pet store-type Boas and their are too many of those. You could really make some nice looking babies with that female and the right male.
