Colors starting to show!

DMong May 10, 2008 05:44 PM

I took this pic yesterday, just after a fresh shed, and I can see the nice lavender/purple/pinks starting to develop nicely in this little guy. I wish I could capture the deep "ruby-red" eye coloration better, but the light has to be just right, as his eyes are a deeper, darker red than many other hypo Lavender's that I've seen.

enjoy!, ~Doug

Doug,

That thing is sweet. I see the color that you speak of. I don't have any lavenders, but I caught this hognose on Wednesday and it was pretty cool.

Thanks Tim, glad you like it.......man!,....that's a nice little boldly patterned Hognose there!.

I caught a melanistic phase(solid black) Hognose going crossing an off-ramp from I-95 in Ft. Pierce, Florida a while back. I wish to god I had a pic of it though, but I didn't have my digital camera at that time....GRRR!! It was as tame as a kitten.

I would have kept it, but I couldn't find any toads in the area to scent mice with, so I let it go in the same area I caught it in. Do you plan on keeping that one, and do the scenting deal to switch it over gradually? I really like the cute little Hogs!.

Doug,

I live in Ohio, so it's not worth the hassle of keeping. I caught that one in Virginia in a protected area. I posted some additional pics in the "Field Notes & Observations" section of this forum.

Very Nice. Funny that you mentioned the eyes. i was just in "the snake room" and noticed my lavender had some super red ruby eyes, but yet blue-ish.

Thanks Misty!,....yeah, it's funny about those, some have VERY noticable red eyes, and some are so deep, they almost look normally dark. At certain angles, this one's eyes have a dark bluish hue too, and other angles you can plainly see the deep rich bloodred/ruby coloration. Both the parents of this one have very noticeable ruby-red eyes as well. Different hatchlings also seem to start out life with a pink, peachy/orange coloration, and others are colored like mine. Both the parent's are really colorful "screamers", so I can't wait to see what this guy will end up looking like as an adult,....my guess is AWESOME!..LOL!

thanks again!, ~Doug

Thanks!,.....yes, I'm looking real forward to seeing his colors develop as he matures, both his parent's were really outstanding.
