new Egyptian Uromastyx questions

gene22 May 10, 2008 07:46 PM

Hello,

I just adopted a 4 year old male Egyptian Uromastyx. He is about nine inches long (mouth to tip of tail). I currently have him in a 20 gallon long. What size tank should he be in? Also, I have read mixed messages concerning feeding crickets. Some care sheet say no crickets some say periodically? What is correct?

Thanks for any information. I jus want to make sure everything is set-up correctly.

Well, let me just say that a 4 year old Egyptian should be much larger than that, my four year old male is 25 inches and 8 pounds.
That aside, a 20 is too small overall, I would give the biggest cage you can, I have a couple hatchlings that are about 9 inches or more and I keep them in 4 foot by 2 foot cages.
Crickets and other bugs are OK in small amounts, I offer my young egyptians about 10 small mealworms a week at most. I will stop feeding them at 1.5 years or so. Just don't over do the bugs.

Ask any other questions you have. I have added a pic of my 4 year old male Omar.

Eight Pounds? Put him back on the scale because that's not possible.

And why is that not possible?

Thanks for the information. I adopted him from a local pet store about a week ago. One of the employees knew the person who previously had him. What could have caused the slow growth rate. He appears very healthy. I have been feeding him escarole, dandelion, peas, carrots and have been using T-Rex uromastyx dust. Any other suggetions? I want to make sure he is getting everything he needs.

That sounds good. Just make sure to keep him very hot. These guys need a basking temp of about 125 degrees and an ambient cage temp of around 85-90 degrees. Their heat is very important for health.

Thanks for the pictures. I am new to this forum how did you attach that picture? Also, What type of UVB do you use for your egyptian Uros. I am going to make a bigger set-up using a 50 gallon rubbermaid. I was thinking of using a Zoo Med powersun (not sure if I need the 100 or 160 watt).

Thanks

The rubbermaid sounds good. I use either Reptisun 10.0's or the merc vapors on my egptians, just depends on what I have.
The watt size depends on the cage size.

I attach the pic using a host site, I use photobucket. I put the photos there and then attach the link when you post a comment.
