Keeled Box Turtles??

FenderStratGuy Aug 30, 2003 11:30 PM

Does anyone know of any breeders or anyone who sells Keeled Box turtles (Pyxidea mouhotii)? I think they are also known as the Jagged Edge box turtle and they are from asia. I did not see any on the Kingsnake classifieds. Does anyone here sell these from time to time or know anyone who does? If so I really really want one. I'm also going to the Reptile Expo in dallas Texas next week (sept 6-7) looking for these. If any of ya'll have one for sale I'd also like to know how much I'm looking at. Get back with me and lets see if we can work a deal. I am also interested in Flowerback box turtles (Cuora galbinifrons). Thanks!

There is an adult male for sale for $150 on the turtletimes website classifieds page. They are captive bred by a few people in the U.S. True captive bred hatchling are rarely available to the pet trade or general public. They usually get sucked up by hardcore turtle enthusiasts that happen to be friends of the breeder.

Wow I was hoping they weren't anymore than a hundred. Must be somewhat of a rare species. I'll try to email a few sellers on kingsnake and see if they breed them. Also, do you know any information on the care of this turtle. I have found a website that says they are relatively easy to keep in captivity, however a reply I got in a different forum says that they and flowerbacks are among the most demanding of herps, to keep.
Thanks

Yes, $150 is a little high. They definately pop up from time to time for $50-100. They aren't exactly rare, but like most species of turtles from southeast Asia they are imediately threatened with becoming endangered and/or extinct in the wild.

They thrive in a warm, humid terrestrial environment. They also enjoy long soaks, so a shallow water source needs to be provided. They are omnivores and like north american box turtles, are keen hunters of live prey.

Like I said before, as of right now, they are rarely bred in captivity and only by a few people. Truely captive bred hatchlings usually fetch a much higher price than wild caught individuals.

Do you think that a 50 gallon aquarium like tank would be large enough for it? About how much room should I allow for dirt and substrate for them to bury holes in? Also, do you think I could keep a couple small species of lizards in with it, like geckos or anoles? And if I decided to get something a little bit larger, do you think that it could coexist with another species of box turtle? Like maybe a Malay? Or would a Malay require a totally different habitat. And also, would a 70 gallon be big enough I'm thinkin for 2 box turtles?
also ooone more question....do asiatic turtles require more space for roaming about than american box turtles? are they more active?
Thanks!!

If know anyone that is selling a Pyxidea in the $50-100 range please let me know!

Good luck with finding them for that price right now. You won't see anyone selling them for that price until they are being imported again, if that even happens this year. Corey Sawyer has imported them in the past and so has Kameron at Bushmaster, but with their current CITES Appendix II listing and with the issues with Asia after the SARS scare these may be offered at higher prices in the future, I believe.

I would also not suggest getting any Cuora galbinifrons that are fresh wild caught unless you have some experience with Asian turtles. These turtles are extremely hard to get cleaned up without the proper experience and the access to a good supply of medications. They are very good at sucking deep into their shell and not coming out to eat and sometimes you have to physically pull their heads out in order to give them a gavage. These are also expensive turtles. If I recall, I have seen them for around $600 each sometimes last year.

I am keeping C. galbinifrons since 1996. I found that they need a lot of green food especially the WC one. However, the number in wild is droping very fast. Price in south China is very low. For a small C. galbinifrons or Pyxidea mouhotii it cost 10 to 20USD.

bigboi Sep 07, 2003 11:00 AM

The price in China is very low, but the price in the US is a lot higher due to the hardships of getting them into the US and the demand for them here. Especially some of the Appendix II and I species. You have to keep in mind that most of the turtles sold in China are at FOOD markets and that is what they were intended for. So that is why they price is like that.

I've found cory's number at his website, but couldn't find Kameron or bushmaster anywhere. I am actually having a heck of a time finding anyone who has these. I'm probably just going to have to call a bunch of these breeders because I'm getting no where with emails. Do you know kameron's contact info? If you don't feel comfortable posting it, could you email it to me at
Chapwalker98@hotmail.com

Thanks,
Mark

FREDS PET CENTER. (I saw his banner when I clicked on your message) is listed in the Kingsnake Breeders/Dealers section under "Retail Stores." I bought a muhoti from him a few years ago and I kept it with two chinese boxes and one leaf turtle for about 2 years. I recently gave it to a school for disabled children for their menagerie. When I saw your message I clicked on his site, clicked "Turtles" and see that he has several muhotis that look nice for $65 each, 2 for $120.

Good luck.
