stunted growth

gene22 May 11, 2008 01:32 PM

I just adopted a 4 year old uromastyx that is only 9 inches long. I am not certain how the original owner too car of him. From everything that I have been reading it appears that he should be much larger. He appears to be very healthy. Will he continue to grow if his diet and conditions are correct?

Thanks

i noticed in one of your other posts you mentioned it was an egyption but could you post some pics so we could verify?
even if its a mali 9 inches is very small for that age but an egyption should be much much larger at that age.

That is a really good question.
I am sure that given proper food and housing, and provided that the uro is healthy, it should begin to grow.
Generally speaking, a yearling Egyptian uro will be close to 12".
Growth rates can be reduced by many factors including food, housing, and aggression from cagemates.
It would be great to see a picture of the uro to see if there are anything the forum would determine about the health of the uro.
Having had two clutches of eggs hatch, i have seen tremendous differences from individuals in the same clutch. Differences of size, coloration, markings, temperament, food preference, etc...
Lots of variations for sure!
Good luck.

Here is a shot of three of my last hatchlings.
Each of them is close to 9" at 6 months old.

Thanks for the pictures. I have attached a picture of mine. I plan on upgrading him to a larger enclosure maybe a 50 gallon rubbermaid or aquarium. Are ZooMeds Powersun bulbs any good for UVB and heat. Would a 100 watt or 160 watt be the right choice?

Thanks
Gene

I wouldn't get a Powersun. Get a Megaray, T Rex, or a Solar Glo. Those are really the only MVBs worth buying. The Megaray and T Rex are about equal, though the megaray costs less, and the Solar Glo is almost as good as the first two, but the Powersun has a bad failure rate and doesn't produce the UVB like the other two.

Best of luck with the little guy. Even if he ends up staying stunted, he can still be a terrific little buddy. I have rescue lizards here that are stunted, handicapped, etc, and they make wonderful pets once you get them to feeling better.

That is not an eyptian, if I am not mistaken it appears to be a Mali Uromastyx. Still a great uro, but the size and age are not as big an issue.

Lucy...Not quite sure what the question is?
Lucy is a male Egyptian Uro, greater than 5 years old, I estimate that he is closer to 10.

I agree with Phil. Your uro looks to be a Mali.
So your growth rates would not be the same as a 4 year old Egyptian.

Oh, sorry.
That's actually Grover's tail.
His is somewhat longer than Lucy's. Lucy is heavier than Grover, but he is longer. Both are male. Lucy is much older.
