I saw a picture of a wild fence lizard that had tiny red parasites around its neck, under its scales. I can't remeber whether they were called mites or chiggers, but I'd say that they're dangerous to reptiles, if we're both talking about the same thing.

Chiggers was my thought also, and like mites they live on the blood so they could be a problem.

Rat and mouse mites are NOT transferable to humans or reptiles.
He had them before he was wounded. If you got him from a colony of feeders your raising yourself, it's safe to say they all have them.

ive never seen them before, and i work with the rodents every day,and that includes on chewed mice that had blood visible, these mites or? looked like on this one mouse a hundred RED mites around the bloody nape of a live mouse some mites were fat and red and smaller red ones heading to the wound to drink up.
Not to doubt there are more, just cant see em

This is nice in theory but....
I have had the red mites infect reptiles that were outside (in Upstate NY these mites are indigenous) for one day. Whether they were feeding on the igs was moot since they clung to them and were not leaving without ivermectin.
I also have had a couple weeks of chigger like itching all over myself due to mites that "are NOT transferable to humans" .
Transferable or not I would get rid of them ASAP.

I'm not mean. You're just a sissy.

Yeah, chiggers can definately bite humans. They make ichy red spots on you,(not sure if its the bite or the chigger). Does anybody know if chiggers are the same as those tiny red bugs that crawl around on stone/concrete walls?

My mistake! LOL, Sonya thank you for pointing that out. Rat LICE are not transferable to humans. Rodent MITES can bite humans like Sonya pointed out. I got the two turned around.
Mites that prey on mammals are still species specific and won't infect reptiles like snake mites do. Rat mites won't survive on reptiles, but they can try.
