6 am babies!

medyssa May 12, 2008 08:33 AM

I love my snakes. They are always there for me. With my boyfriend and I on the rocks, Copper did the best thing she could to distract me, HAVE BABIES!!!
So far 4 born live and the rest have been slugs, she still has a ways to go, but fortunately she was nice enough to let me take out the babies and then shoot some video of her expelling slugs really quick. I will get it linked all posted later tonight when I have time, so far I have just enough time to clean everything up and get into work only about an hour late or so.
At the moment I'm going back to bed for a little bit.
Since Copper has so nicely also provided me a reason to sleep in a bit.

Currently, the stats stand at
4 live babies, no premies or stillborns, approximately 14 slugs.
BTW is it normal for mom to eat the slugs? I can imagine it would be, she was sitting on one and would let me move her to pick it up so she ended up eating it. I'll have pictures later tonight. I dont have weights or anything yet either sadly. But the four living babies seem to be great. They were all trying to escape not 10 minutes being in their container.
I still have Dudette due soon, and she keeps looking very uncomfortable so we will see how much longer there.

Too bad on all the slugs but congrats on the babies in spite of all the slugs. High slug count litters are often early with the live ones being preemies and maybe not surviving.

Yeah, BRB moms will often eat every available slug. IMO That's the reason why some litters seem to have no slugs at all - mom ate them before anyone saw them!!

All the babies look full size, one is a bit small but they look normal, two have some yolk still.

Jess,
....Congratulations. Lots of slugs in a litter is frustrating. When I see litters like that I spend way too much time trying to figure out if I had the cooling or the timing wrong somewhere.

Congratulations! New babies are a great start to a Monday morning!

medyssa May 12, 2008 01:30 PM

Yeah I am a bit disappointed, but happy that mom and the babies seemed to all be doing great when I left home for work this morning. I didnt get time to take weights but they all seem in the normal range, two still had yolk attached. They were happily trying to escape their container when I left for work.
I set the temp at 78, seem about right? I gave them a shallow bowl with a little water in it as well as dampening the paper towels on the bottom.

Maybe two degrees warmer with the yolks still to absorb.

Slugs are disappointing but having 4 live, healthy babies is a joy! Congrats!

You know, thats pretty much what I thought about them all day home and through my 45 minute commute...what joys I have to come home to!
But then one started smelling me and decided I must taste good and so now begins the time where I am covered in little puncture scabs....my sweet little joys!
