Impacted snake

scott_felzer May 12, 2008 10:59 AM

The garter snake has given birth to three babies, one live the others stillborns. She is still very impacted and this has been since last Saturday. Any tips on how to address this would be appreciated.

Scott

PS This is her from the Spring, I would really hate to lose her.

im not sure what the usual clutch size is but im guessing its more, havent dealt with lots of snake breeding, more lizards, but if by "impacted" you mean you think she still has babies in her get to a vet NOW!
good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks for your response. I took the snake to the vet on Monday. They had to do surgery on her and she came out in good shape. She had numerous dead babies in her, and there was a fleshy substance blocking her cloaca, which was the impaction. It's hard to say whether I had brought her in quicker would have saved the babies or not but at least she is safe (flame eastern garter-my nicest one).

Thanks again,

Scott

Hey Scott, I've always been a fan of your garters. I'm happy this one made it out of surgery.
