Is she is or is she ain't?

mvite May 12, 2008 11:49 AM

Hey everyone--

This is my first Spring breeding colubrids. I have a pair of possible het Peanut Butter Brooksis---and the female shed 8 days ago.

My question is---do you think she looks gravid? She eats fine----she even ate last night.

I know thise pic isn't t the best shots of her belly---I can get others if you'd like.

Either way, I guess I will know for sure within the next 7 days!

Thanks for your help-

Here's another bad pic!

This picture actually looks like a male to me- gets thicker at the vent. Did you mix the two up? Doesn't look gravid to me either. Anyone else see it like I do? Very nice looking, though.

mvite May 12, 2008 04:31 PM

I hope I didn't mix them up!! LOL!

See if you can see better from pics later in the thread if possible.

I am sometimes absent minded enough to mix the two though!

Thanks for the compliment!

I can't really tell by the pic, as brooksi are pretty stocky by nature to begin with. But it seems to me they only may have mated VERY recently from the info given. Did you witness the mating?

In any case, a gravid female will clearly start showing signs of swelling after a few weeks of mating, they will display a thickening in the latter half of the body, and you should be able to palpate(feel) the egg lumps in her body as she gently glides over your index finger.

They will generally lay the eggs several days AFTER a shed around 40-45 days or so, but not necessarily always.

Hope this helps some.

best regards, ~Doug

Thanks Doug!

I witnessed a couple matings--at least 4-5 weeks ago. Then she shed recently. I thought she would lay within 2 weeks or so after a shed---my bad!

You are right about the stockiness--she's a tank normally.

I tried to palpatate --- but unlike my BPs and corns--I cant feel anything---just squishiness. Since she eats fairly often, I get confused with what I am feeling--you know??!!

I will get a couple more pics.

The male was biting into her side while he was breeding her---quite a Romeo!

>>> "I witnessed a couple matings--at least 4-5 weeks ago. Then she shed recently. I thought she would lay within 2 weeks or so after a shed---my bad!"

No!!, that is CORRECT, you must have misunderstood my post, if you witnessed the matings 4-5 weeks ago, then she shed recently, if she is gravid they should generally lay approx. 6-10 days after her shed, this sounds very normal. Either she is VERY pregnant, or she isn't. But you should be able to see/feel this by now, and she should feel much heavier as well.

good luck!, ~Doug

Cool--I gotcha now!

I took her water out and have provided a moist hide.

I just felt her up again--and I do feel things---but she has been eating every couple of days. (This is my only pair of Kings--but I know those bumps I feel could probably be SPLAT! intended for the newspaper!)

Thanks again for your help!

This is one of my albino hondos that was bred 3 weeks ago. She looks to be gravid....oops...that's another forum!!

shannon brown May 12, 2008 01:21 PM

I would say that the hondo is ovulating and you should be placing her in with the male right now.If she is already gravid she will just try and get away and or buck the male off.Never assume they are gravid because they look thicker and there scales are seperating. Her largest section is mid body so I would say ovulating.
Shannon

p.s. I don't think that your brooksi is gravid at all.

mvite May 12, 2008 01:26 PM

Thank you!

I am putting the male in with her right now. He has been working out with another female this past weekend---

Thanks again guys---I appreciate the shared experience!

SHANNON--THANK YOU!!

There is absolutely NO BUCKING going on between them right now.

Thanks again Shannon!

Here are a couple pics--but again--she seems so much less puffy than she has!! LOL! It figures.

DMong May 12, 2008 12:57 PM

Well, she looks pretty fat to me towards the cloaca in those pics!, I hope you have a nice nesting box ready for her, as she might be waiting on YOU for providing her with a good moist substrate to lay them in. moistened spagnum moss in an apropriate sized plastic box works well for the substrate.

good luck!, ~Doug

That's great news!

I have had a moist hide in there with her for a couple weeks---since before the shed to help with moisture.

She's getting somewhat more active---so I'm hoping!

shannon brown May 12, 2008 01:22 PM

this pic shows better and she may be gravid. You will know in a day or three.
Good luck,

NICE!!

These are my only Kings--I have mostly corns, milks, BPS and some dwarf retics.

But your pics make me want more Kings!

Thanks for your help gang---I am on the verge of bustin with colubrids---but its my first time!!! I appreciate the advice!

Once I get some hatchlings---I am up for trading with whoever wants! I should have many different het Ice corns--and some opals---and hopefully some snow hondurans.

Good luck Mark but a bit of advise.DON'T ask for trades etc.. on the forum or the thread will be janked all together. They are very touchy about that so do it via private e-mail.

Take care,
Shannon

Well I didn't read the entire thread but personally I don't think she is gravid. Its pretty rare for a female to eat while gravid, not unheard of, but rare. She doesn't really look that swollen to me either. If she were just a few days away from laying she should be HUGE.

How old is the pair?

This almost makes me think that she ovulated but was not fertilized. The ovum would give you a slightly swollen look - just enough to make you wonder - but then nothing ever happens.

Hopefully I am wrong, and nice snake.

mvite May 12, 2008 09:36 PM

You could be right--I think I could have boned this one up---seeing as how Shannon was able to get me and my hondos fixed up earlier in the thread.

These are supposedly 2005's.

I had run my male BPs with the gals for months and months before I stopped---but with most of my colubrids--I let them hook up a bunch of times and then I gave it a complete rest. (I felt like they had worked really hard!)

So far--2 of my female corns have laid---so hopefully this king will!!

Thanks for the kind words--she is a great looking snake. The male is equally beautiful--but 2x the length.

Still nothing!

I just know I screwed it up.

Here's a pic from a couple weeks back when I thought she looked her biggest. I'm guessing this is when I missed my opportunity.

She had been bred several times prior to this pic--so I thought I would give her a rest. The male is pretty aggressive with her and took a big mouthful of her back at every session!

Well, don't give up just yet!

Your female just shed 8 days ago... the norm is 10 days post shed... my poss. het PB female just laid today (12 days post shed),,, and she was still feeding up till 7 days ago. (they'll eat way longer if you offer smaller meals... rat pinks, fuzzies, etc...)

If you can palpate and feel eggs just give her a nest box... keep the water in there, no need to dehydrate a gravid female (esp. a Floridana)...

The way I confirm whether my female is gravid is continue introducing the male until she completely resists him... if you feel she may not be gravid throw the male in and observe her reaction...

My female:

Bred on 3-22, 3-24, 3-25, 3-27, 4-6

Shed on: 5-1

Last Fed on: 5-6

Laid on: 5-13

good luck

~Z

NICE PIC Z!

Whoa--I can feel the humidity from that egg on my upper lip!

I am pretty sure that my girl isn't holding eggs.... I can't believe it. I had them together almost every day for months and months. I gave them a couple days rest every week or so---but I bet I removed him before I should have.

I just put him back in with her----

I can't believe I can screw something up that happens on its own outside!!!
