Baby Argentinian Rainbows

Jeff Clark May 12, 2008 01:19 PM

This litter of Argentinian Rainbow Boas, Epicrates cenchria alvarezi was born here this morning. The female has looked like she was ready for the last week. She laid litters of 10 and 9 healthy babies in may of each of the last two years. The litter contains 5 healthy babies and 9 or more slugs.

The female was eating this slug when I first checked on her this morning. This is the first time I have seen alvarezi eat slugs, though this is only my sixth litter of alvarezi and this is the first litter I have seen of them that contained lots of slugs.

Dave,
...I was wondering the same thing. They do seem to be full term even though three still have some yolk remaining. I am letting them be for now to absorb as much as possible.

Congratulations Jeff. Nice looking babies. I have always thought the Argentinians were pretty neat looking but I have never seen any person.
If I remember correctly, last year you posted that they typically have male heavy litters. Do you know the ratio of this one? (If my failing memory is correct anyway) Also, any idea what causes it?

Jeff Clark May 12, 2008 01:53 PM

Milo,
...My litters have been male heavy and also what few Argentinians I do see for sale seem to be very male heavy. This subspecies is also pretty tough to sex. About half of them that I have purchased over the years have been missexed and I missexed a couple babies myself last year. I am not sure what is going on with this.
Jeff

Question as usual.

If all where fertilized this year...count would have been 14 or more neonates (5 healthy babies and 9 or more slugs)

So in the other two years breeding's did you get 9 or 10 neonates and 5 or more slugs ?

Aubrey,
...Thanks. This subspecies may be right for you. They are more colubrid like in activity level and husbandry requirements than Brazilians.

Jess,
...If you ever want to make slugs seem more than slightly disappointing just think of each of them as a $100 hard boiled egg you cannot eat.

oh my goodness, that made me laugh so hard! Yeah I could see it that way, but in all reality I am pretty happy that mom and babies seem to be doing well.

Congrats on the litter Jeff. This is her third year in a row? I wonder if thats why the higher slug count. Any POS counts on her last 3 litters?
Paul

Jeff Clark May 12, 2008 11:09 PM

Paul,
....Too much breeding pressure is a possibility but she really did eat well and bulk up much bigger this year than the last two. Her litter two years ago was her first and the 9 or 10 babies was a big litter for as small as she was then. Sorry but she shed pretty often the last few months and I did not record shed dates. The male was courting her aggressively as recently as february which had me wondering when she became gravid and she had no observable ovulatory swell.
Jeff
