Need opinion on ailment (dermatitis)

Sano_17 May 12, 2008 05:08 PM

My ball python recently contracted some sort of dermatitis on his belly scales and partially on his tail. I went to take him out of the cage to clean up and found that he was partially stuck to the bottom of the cage (he began crawling underneath the "Reptile Carpet" and bark substrate sitting on the glass bottom)and that a sticky foul fluid was there (prabably puss and excrement, no feces were present). I'm guessing he had excreated waste and sat in that same spot then bacteria or somesort of fungus infected his skin. He was near his heater but not directy on it to cause any sort of burn.

I quickly cleaned and changed the substrate to newspaper and applied antibiotic ointment after washing the area gentley with a cloth. It seems to have gotten better and dried up a lot, but now he'starting to shed in response, which I'm concerned about.

I could use someone's opinion on this on what else I can do in the meantime, or what I can tell my vet or get from him. Thanks.

My wife and I rescued a Ball w/ a similar condition. We took her to the vet, got her some injections, and soaked her 2x a day for 30 days 20 min ea. and gave her shots every 3 days. It was a pain but she got better. Find A Herp Vet Soon.

I have Dave and Tracy Barker's manual saying to apply antibiotic ointment for a duration of three weeks, if no improvment, then to seek one. It pusses once in a while but has clearly really dried up, and those crusted scales are falling off...the belly scales show slight bleeding then puss up again. Is that a good sign? For the eight years I've had him this has never happened..

Could you tell me exactly what the vet told you? The ailment, drugs, ect.
