Wayne,
You'll have to check your local laws (City & County) but as far as the State of NC goes, yes, you can keep copperheads & cottonmouths.

The law states:
3. Individuals may hold less than five reptiles or less than 25 amphibians not on the endangered, threatened or special concern lists and not including spotted turtles, Carolina pygmy rattlesnakes, timber (canebrake) rattlesnakes and Eastern coral snakes without a Captivity License or Permit.

Copperheads & Cottonmouths are not listed as endangered, threatened or special concern.

If you want to keep 5 or more NC native reptiles you'll need a permit but it is a free on.

Here's a link to the NC Nongame Info: www.ncwildlife.org/pg02_Regs/pg2d.htm

What part of NC did you move to?

Have a good one!

Where did you see the information re: a limit of 5 reptiles?

I browsed the site, but aside from the restricted exotics, I did not see any sort of limitations.

Thanks

Hey!
The limit info is within the Other Regulations/Possession and Collection link from that first page I posted. Here's a direct link to it: www.ncwildlife.org/pg02_Regs/pg2d2.htm

Does that apply to non-native species? For example, ball pythons or Sidewinders?

Or is that strictly for native wildlife?

HappyHillbilly May 14, 2008 10:57 PM

Native.

"Definitions of “wildlife” in the General Statues vary. For purposes of this section, “wildlife” is defined as all wild animals found in North Carolina. With respect to possession and collection of wildlife, the Statutes generally distinguish between dead wildlife, live wildlife, and exotic wildlife."
