Mike,

That is a Texas garter, their bright orange stripes are indicative of the species. Those don't pop up often in the hobby. I checked Stebbins and they list their range as E. central Texas w/ a few populations in SW Kansas and the Texas panhandle. How far are you from these areas? You may have a new locality to add to their range.

I live about 30 miles west of Norman,OK. Here are a few more pics

Is there an easy way for sexing these things?

scott_felzer May 12, 2008 10:12 PM

It is a beauty! From the tail, looks like a male? I had a friend that had an albino a few years ago, unfortunately it passed away on him. Think he may have had some hets too, these passed too.

Not to pipe in my "Garter Guru", but isn't that girth a little large for a male and the larger head shape female-ish? I thought it looked gravid. If I'm wrong, don't get on my case, I'm just an iguana guy

reed_kamsler May 13, 2008 12:26 AM

i think it might be a male to, the tail looks like it gets smaller very gradually from the cloaca, cloaca shots would help for 100% id, i dont think its gravid, that lump is in the wrong place, looks like it just ate something, male and females dont have a head size difference (i think) i think the snake is just a little sinny so its head sticks out more

reed_kamsler May 13, 2008 12:34 AM

i take the i think its a male part back, i looked at it more, kinda does look female, wont be sure untill you post a cloaca shot though

scott_felzer May 13, 2008 04:19 PM

Hey Mark,

Long time, did not know you still checked in over here

I thought the same thing but after looking at the tail and how long and slender it was, deduced it is a male. That is what I am sticking with and that is my final answer (Regis).

Scott

PS I may choose to phone a friend on this one

PS The only full proof way to accurately sex is to probe (or pop when younger-this snake is way too mature to pop), Mark do you have one?

Mike, do you own one?

Mark, Maybe you can help out and visit Mike and probe it for him ?? I would but being that I reside in NC, you are a lot closer in proximity (CA) and it would be much easier for you

MikeRoberts May 13, 2008 08:58 PM

I do have probes BUT I was just going to let it go. If there is anybody in Oklahoma that wants it I will give it to them. I WILL NOT SHIP. Thanks Mike

I wish I could make that road trip....

Very pretty snake, looks like it ate a bullfrog. It seems like my females have wider heads, but then again they have a wider everything exept the tail.

Yea that is Thamnophis sirtalis annectans, ive always wanted one of those, like for many years, until two years ago when the guy at my local pet store ordered a bunch of indonesian garters, even though they really aren't garters, but anyway, right away one caught my attention that didn't quite fit the rest and well wouldn't you believe it, it was a thamnophis annectans and i was like.....sweeeet, and he gave it to me for free because i was such a good friend of his and because he knows how much i love garter snakes. By the way that is a very beautiful specimen you have there
