Very cool!,.....and a great photo too. That one has some heavy duty Texas Rat influence in his genetic lineage looking at all that orange. Much of Oklahoma has a distinct intergrade zone running right across it.

Indeed. As I have noted here before, living in OKC I encounter black/Texas rats periodically (have one I rescued from my own neighborhood) and the different patterns and colorations are striking. I have seen/handled/released several in one section of land where my wife keeps her horse in NE Oklahoma County in the past few years and they have ranged from very smilar to the one pictured on this thread to much darker, almost patternless, with far more coloration on he belly . . . all from a population in one micro-area. It's fun to check out the different looks in this one very diverse and common species here in Oklahoma.

Yes, that is very interesting how they can be so phenotypically diverse, even within a small given area such as you described.
