Hog Eats Hog?

tortoiseguy65 May 13, 2008 07:09 AM

Anyone ever had this happen with Westerns? This morning I went to check on a pair of my son's hogs and the male was nowhere to be found. Has anyone ever had one eat another? My son was pretty upset at the loss of the male, as he is a 0 het albino and he is our main(only) breeder. This guy was quite a bit smaller than the female, but most of our females are larger than him. They had only been together for less than 24 hours this time. They had been together previously, but I was rotating him back through with the various females to ensure he got the job done. I am at a loss.

Take care,
Jeff Port

That sucks Jeff, are you sure he didn't escape.Even though he is allot smaller it should be obvious if he was eatin?

Sorry for your loss.

Shannon

Shannon,
Yes, he was eaten. She has a large bulge to show for it.As I said, my son is pretty upset as am I. Today is my birthday, and that wasn't a very nice present. I hope he got a few of our girls bred before his untimely passing. Since he is our only male, we will be in need of another at some point. One of our females, a 66% het albino appears gravid, so hopefully she will prove out and we will get a nice albino male.

Take care,
Jeff Port

Thanks Shannon. Now we need to find a replacement for our male. It really is a shame, as this male had some really nice color and I was looking forward to seeing an albino out of him. I am still hopeful though, as our best red female that is 66% het appears to be gravid. She has been cruising all over her tub for the last several days. She is ignoring the nest box though. This will be her first clutch and my first hog production in about 13 years, so I am really looking forward to her clutch.

Take care,
Jeff Port

Yes, I have had a hatchling eat another hatchling. I have pics that I can post later or send if anyone needs/wants to see.

Last year I had my largest female kill her mate. I checked on them in the a.m. just before leaving for work. Everything looked fine. I checked again as soon as I got home from work and she had chewed him up. He was dead and you could see she had been chewing on him. She is very high strung, showy, etc.
I've bred many hogs, various size males and females, and never had this type of problem.
He was on loan to me and was a 100% het for albino.

Like I said, this girl was quite a bit larger, probably close to 2ft. She is somewhat agressive and when purchased, we were told she was a biter although she hasn't attempted yet. She does hood out and hiss quite a bit. This was a lesson learned, unfortunately at the high cost of our male's life.

Take care
Jeff

did you feed them recently? i have had one latch on to another shortly after feedin. when there still in that feeding frenzy anything is fair game including fingers

Well, the female just regurgitated the remains of the male. Really nasty. Not much left of him...
